My bun gets unlimited timothy hay, and a little bit of orchard grass mixed in with it about 1/3 of the time. A few times a month I was giving her a small handful of alfalfa hay as a “topper” to her pile of yummy hay or as a treat, but lately she seems to be going nuts for it! She figured out which bag has the alfalfa and pull it out from where I hide it and yanks on it until I open it. Then she actually dives into the bag itself after I open the tab and like lays halfway in it munching away  It’s so cute. She doesn’t eat tons of it, but she chews pretty good for a few minutes. I’m not sure if I should be giving her this a little more often as a treat or should incorporate it more once or twice a week mixed in with her timothy?

BTW she is 4 years old, 4.2 pounds, and in excellent health from her wellness vet check three weeks ago.

Alfalfa hay is high in calories and high in calcium. Everything I’ve read says not to give it to adult bunnies because of the risk of bladder stones and bladder sludge from too much calcium. With timothy and orchard grass hay being safe and healthy for your bunny, I would just stick with those. If you want a hay treat option, try oat hay. Oat hay is a grass hay (timothy and orchard are grass hays) and bunnies love the seed heads — just don’t give too many because the seed heads are high in calories. Oat hay stalks are high in fiber.

If a bunny doesn’t have any issues, then the occasional alfalfa treat probably won’t do any harm. I know several people on here use it as a topper as well. Eating too much can be fattening though. You might have opened a can of worms with your bun. It sounds like she likes it a little too much. If you continue to give it to her, I would definitely restrict the amount like you have been doing. Make sure she isn’t passing up all of her grass hay and instead waiting for the alfalfa though. You want her eating the grass hay. JR made a good suggestion with the oat hay. My buns love it too.

I’ve given little bits of the alfalfa ever since I got her as a 4 month old. She is a fabulous hay eater and I give her fresh timothy every day. I think I’ll stick with it probably then as an occasional type thing, there are some months when I don’t give her any so I think she appreciated it more recently as I haven’t broken it out this summer yet I don’t think. I will call my vet tech on Monday and maybe double check if they have any specific recommendations.
