So we got Sage a week ago yesterday. Well just the past couple of days he has been wheezing/snorting. Well we don’t have the money right now to take him to the vet. He is still eating his hay and pellets just fine and drinking. But we don’t plan to get to attached to him right now in case he passes from what ever he has. Cause our last bunny we got last year passed away 5 months after getting him. And we got him and Sage from the same place. Do you think we could take him back and get our money back since it’s only been a week?

Where did you get him from?
I mean, you can always ask if they’ll take him back, but please don’t. He might well get better anyway, have a little faith in him!

If he’s from a pet store or a breeder, they’ll probably kill him.

Having said that, it’s really important to take him to a vet if he needs to see one. You say he’s wheezing? Is there any discharge from his nose?

Is the wheezing all the time, or just occasionally, like a sneeze?

Well you have money anytime soon to take him to the vet?

Just occasionally. He does sneeze a lot. And he snorts when you pet him and when he’s eating.

Probably not until the end of August or beginning of Sept. My husband is the only one working right now and kids are about to start school so they need clothes and school supplies. And the tire on my car is going bad.

My rabbit sneezed a bit when I first got her because she wasn’t used to the bedding. I didn’t know that though until I took her to the vet. If you’re using bedding, you could consider switching it out or getting rid of it altogether. You could also try dusting the room your bun is in, and vacuuming.

Rabbits make noise when they are sick, angry/scared/territorial, or happy. Honking is a happy sound, and can be made when a rabbit is hormonal, or when a rabbit is happy to be eating or pet. Snorting is anger/fear/territorial behavior, and means “stay away” or “I don’t like that”. My rabbit can make little squeaky sounds. She is a lop ear, and has bad hearing, so I don’t think she knows she’s doing it. She usually does it when she’s happy. The context of your rabbit’s actions means a lot. Think of how the environment has changed to make them act a certain way, or what other signals they are giving (body language, signs of sickness, etc.) when they make a new noise.

You can’t be sure something is not wrong unless you get your bun checked by a professional. I would suggest taking either public transit, or sharing a car with your husband until you can afford to get the tire on your car fixed. This way, you might be able to get your bun to the vet sooner.

Unfortunately none of us here on the forums are vets so the best we can do is to provide alternative suggestions. However ultimately it is up to you if you want to bring your rabbit to the vet. You can call them and ask if they do payment plans. Or work with them on finding a cost effective way of diagnosing the wheezing issue. You can also try calling up shelters and rescues for suggestions on rabbit savvy vets that are less costy, flexible on payment, or willing to do a consult over the phone/video call.

Since your rabbit came from a pet store you’d have to check with them on their return policy. Most will not provide a refund unless you’ve had your pet examined by a vet (with proof).

If it is something simple that just requires an antibiotic, then treatment would not cost a lot of money. Antibiotics are relatively inexpensive. It would just depend on what the vet charges. Mine charges $40 for an exam, $25 (I think) for a follow-up visit for the same issue.

I looked at it exactly the opposite when I got my lops. We originally went to get one bunny but couldn’t decide between two of them. The breeder said if we took them both and decided to only keep obe of them that she’d take the other one back. Took both to the vet, and it turned out that both had coccidia, both had stained feet, and one was too thin. There was no way I could take either one back knowing that they were sick and not being treated. They are the two lops in my signature and they brighten every day for me.

I seriously doubt the pet store will give you your money back.

I hate to scold, but it always disturbs me a little when people buy animals before they have the means to take care of them. This could end up being a really painful lesson for you, but I hope he pulls through.
