I went to say hi to the buns a few mins ago while my husband was out mowing the lawn and I noticed one of Berry’s nails was sitting on the carpet next to him and there was a bloody spot where it should be.  It’s not bleeding any more and he is acting normal not like he is in pain or anything. Do I need to do anything for him? So confused about what happened, we were watching a movie and the buns had been snuggled together napping the whole time. When hubs went out to work on the yard, I went over to see buns and they immediately hopped over to me. No fighting or anything. I did pick him up to give him a nose rub but he didn’t struggle or squirm at all. When I looked back after giving Lola hers there it was.  Does he need to go to the vet if it isn’t bleeding? Poor Berry, I feel so bad!

If you’re able to clean it up okay, he probably doesn’t need a vet (at least not immediately). I would just keep an eye on it. This isn’t all that uncommon, their nail gets caught and they pull and it happens as simple as that. It should grow back okay.

I have checked it a couple of times and I wouldn’t even be able to tell it was missing now. He cleaned all the blood off and uses it to hop and clean his face and ears. What should I watch for? Just your basic signs of infection?

Yep, just keep checking to make sure it is healing and no signs of infection.

Pippin has effectively pulled out at least 2 nails from her front paws. They didn’t grow back the same though. They grew back sideways and hardly need to be trimmed now. Strangely they are the same side nail.

Berry pulled out one of his “thumb” nails. Lola has always had one that was sideways too since we got her…maybe she lost one too then. He seems to be fine now though. No sign of infection or pain at all. It certainly hasn’t stopped him from running up and down our stairs for hours at a time! Silly bun is hilarious to watch.

Wooly pulled out a nail once. I probably wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t found the nail on the floor. It grew back just fine.
