Cash slept most of today. The second he got up and crawled into my lap, there was a massive amount of blood all over my lap randomly. There wasn’t a single speck on my white carpet though. Looked at his underside which was bleeding profusely from his genitals.

I was able to get a hold of my vet, even after they closed for the day. Thank god!

One of the sutures inside the scrotum that were put in had popped out of place and slit open the scrotum, causing him to bleed heavily.

He is all fixed up, and should be alright. He is limited to his carry cage, so he can barely move, on the vets orders. We need to keep him still like this for a few days, so it doesn’t happen again. I don’t think I ever came that close to having a heart attack before. I stood in her office in tears. She said it was a serious enough bleed that if I had waited much longer he prolly would have died.

I asked her why something would happen like that, and she just stared at me, and told me it’s a rare thing that happens, and there really isn’t a reason on why it happens. He goes back tomorrow to be checked up on, and made sure he is alright.

My vet also did not charge me, since she knows I’m currently unemployed, and gave me a hug, promising that if he needed serious help, she would hold off the bills and let me make small payments every month without interest. I love his vet so much. She is a wonderful lady.

Glad he is doing better now. What a scare! Your vet does sound very kind though.

So thankful we caught it. My poor baby.

I’m still freaked out by it honestly. He is stuck in his travel cage now with as little movement as possible for the next 4 days. I just wanna take him out and hold him close and cry, but I’m not allowed to removed him from the cage except to change the towel at the bottom. Vets orders. She is absolutely wonderful, and I’m so thankful I went to her. ((We have two local rabbit vets. I chose her since she seemed to handle Cash better. He looked calmer around her. Except for today. When she was trying to get a look down there he kicked her quite a bit. Can’t blame him though. He must have been in pain.))

She is wondering if the person that did the surgery (I went through our local spay/neuter society since they were for people with tight budgets, and I’m unemployed ATM) did something wrong. She said if any other problems occur with him that she will look into it further with me.

                I’m glad he’s ok.

I was wondering about that too. All of my buns and my dog had internal dissolving stitches and external surgical glue for their spays/neuter. We were told to keep Moshi from running and jumping excessively for 3 days (hopping around in his cage was fine).

Glad your vet is taking over. Is he on pain meds now?

My rabbits both had internal stitches that dissolved as well. My grandmother uses the low-cost spay/neuter clinic for her animals, since she’s on limited income they do it for $20 for her. I had to help her care for the dogs afterwards and the incisions did require us to confine them a lot more than taking them to a more traditional vet. One of her females popped open her incision even with being confined. They are awesome programs and they do the best they can. But, sometimes things happen.

Hopefully the confinement will keep him from tearing any more stitches. Are you supposed to check it when you change out his towel in case of more bleeding?

I’m supposed to change the towel every day twice a day now, as well as check his testicles. My vet was really worried about how swollen the one that ripped open one was. It pretty much was larger than when he had a testicle in it. The other side was fine though. She told me if it swells up any more, get him to her immediately. She’s afraid it it might turn into post-surgical scrotal hemorrhages. She’ll be calling today thought to double check that everything with him is alright, and go over a list of other things she wants me to check for him.

Cash was sleeping on the floor. He moved slowly to climb onto my lap, and I was sitting with my legs spread out, so it wasn’t much of a climb, and then it just tore him open. If the blood hadn’t gushed out all over my legs I wouldn’t have known. I thought he pissed on me until I lifted him and saw the blood covering my lap.

He is off of the pain meds now. They thin his blood, and can cause further, more extreme bleeding, and we can’t risk that. He shockingly enough doesn’t seem to be in any pain. No visible discomfort, no tooth grinding. Lots of oinking and headbutts from inside the carry cage while we stick our hands in there and give him cheek rubs.

They told me to confine his movement for 5 days, but when he gets up and barely moves, and crawls into my lap, that’s what tore it! I regret going to the other place, and wish I just brought him in to the other vet. I would have gladly paid an extra $150 to her just to avoid all of this if I had known.

Thank you. I hope he gets better soon.

I feel really bad for him right now cause I’m hovering around his travel cage constantly. I’m scared to leave him alone. If I leave the room his travel cage comes with me. ((I’m very careful when moving it, and trying to stay in one part of my apartment so I won’t move him too much.)) God forbid I leave the room and he starts to bleed again.

I feel terrible now. I wish I didn’t neuter him. I could have dealt with an aggressive, angry, humping bunny. I didn’t know that this would happen.

I hope he’ll be fine. You couldn’t have foreseen this. Male neuters are as a rule uncomplicated. But things happen. Don’t blame yourself, you wouldn’t have done it if you’d thought it would harm him.

I really wouldn’t have. I’ve never heard of things like this happening before. O.o

He sitting ebside me in the cage now, clearyly unhappy that he can’t be snuggled up in my lap. He keeps throwing his food out of the bars of the cage and giving me this pathetic look. It just breaks my heart.

Don’t beat yourself up. I doubt the clinic did anything wrong, they likely do many, many procedures with no issue. These things just happen sometimes. It could have happened if your vet had done the neuter too. That’s awesome that she’s being so understanding for you.

I know that it’s hard to keep him confined, but it’s short-term and in his best interests… Keep us posted how he does.

                                      UPDATE

Okay so an update on Cash. We just got back from the vet’s again. She called and just wanted me to bring him in so she could take a peek at him.

He is still very swollen, but slightly less than yesterday. Also he lets me check the area now, where yesterday he thrashed, so that is a good sign. The incision area doesn’t look as if it got infected at all. He is eating, drinking, and peeing normally ((Minus the strange smell of his pee now, but that could just be from the meds he was given. Makes it smell similar to stagnant water mixed with a metallic smell.)) His poop is a lot smaller, although the same quantity, but once again that’s the meds screwing with him I think.

She still wants to keep him confined, and for right now to try and keep him as immobile as possible. Also she told me for now to double up on his pellets ((He throws them around so it can be a beotch to keep track of how much he actually eats versus throwing)) so I can try to get as much in him as possible. She also told me to not touch the area to be safe, and to check the incision area once every hour, and if there are any differences than the prior hour to call her, describe the differences and she’ll let me know if I need to bring him back in.  Any signs of bleeding again and we fly down there asap. ((Thank god she is three/four blocks away from my apartment!! Great location for emergencies!))

He is not a happy bun and I can’t blame him.

He keeps thumping at me, and then nudging the door to the carrier, demanding I let him out.

He’s doing better. Posted an update a bit ago. We just got back from the vet.

He is not a happy bunny. He wants out of that cage now, and has started to demand it with pointed thumps, and nudges at the door to the cage. >.<

I’m really glad his vet is so awesome. I owe her so much, and really do appreciate everything she has done for him.

                                            How is Cash doing now?

He is so angry with me. We’ve taken to letting him out of the cage for 30 or so minutes every couple of hours. He just flops down and stretches out. After a bit he starts to move around, so we stop him from exploring and put him back in the cage.

He is still going potty, just not normally. And I thinks it’s cause he isn’t happy with us. He’ll go in the cage, and he will pee outside of the cage, but you can tell he is intentionally holding it in to show his displeasure. ((He has an actual history of doing this so we know what’s going on. He’ll be getting a vigorous tummy massage later tonight and he’ll practically explode the poos.))

His eating though has gone completely back to normal, and he is much more affectionate now. The incisions are healing up nicely, but slowly. I’m still nervous when he is out of the cage cause I’m expecting to look down and just see blood everywhere again honestly, but I’m being good.

As apologies he is being given tomatoes as a treat, which he goes bonkers over. And his favorites greens all week for my apology to him. Vet said after tomorrow we need to keep an eye on him for another couple of days and limit his interaction still, but he should be okay. Fingers crossed.

Glad to hear he still healing nicely. I know its hard to confine him ans e en harder that you can’t explain to him that its for his own good. Once he’s completely healed and can binky ’til his heart’s content, he’ll forget all about it.

I’m trying not to. He let me look at the incisions today without a fight. Makes me excited!

They are scabbed over nicely, with NO traces of swelling any longer, no redness. They are healing beautifully! He should be fully healed soon! <3

I’m so excited for it. And since he behaved so well I cheated and allowed him some extra time from the cage. He’s lounging in his hutch right now, looking so content and happy he isn’t stuck in the teeny cage.

Can he stay on his hutch instead of the carrier now? I’m sure he’d love it but still have to do what’s best for him.

Others have said this, but do not feel that you did anything but what was best for him. You did the right thing by having him neutered, you just had the rare bad experience. You have a good vet for him now and hopefully you’ll be able to put all of this behind you in a couple of days.

Sadly his hutch has a massive tunnel and a dig box, so it’s kind alike a magical play fortress so no.

But thankfully today he is allowed out of the cage once the evening hits, and back into his normal cage, which is good. And lots of play time outside of the cage. So he’ll certainly be a happy bunny.

I’m starting to not feel bad. It certainly was a terrifying first experience. But I’m not gonna let it hold me back anymore. And thanks for the vibes. Fingers crossed that there are no more issues!

Hopefully Cash is happily back in his normal home now and able to play in his magical play fortress! Please keep us posted on his continued recovery. I’d definitely like to know when he’s given the “all healed” stamp!

So Cash is just about all healed. Maybe another day or three…

Yesterday he was out of the cage for 4 hours, and was the happiest bunny ever!

He ran about, and played in his fortress, ate voraciously and snuggled a ton.

No binkies or attempts at them, although we could tell he was super happy. So I’m sure he still doesn’t feel 100% better because of it. ((Normally he binkies everywhere.))

We gave him free roam of the apartment, and he went out and explored everywhere, but always came back to be near us in the end.
