The link above is the listing for an x-pen that comes in many different heights and I’m wondering which one I should get. I would like to add is as an addition to the main cage to allow more room and time outside the cage, not including floor time.

The breed I am looking at getting is an english lop. I know they don’t tend to jump much since their long ears. I wanted to put that into consideration.

I have 48 inch midwest xpens with the new maxlock doors for my holland lops. I went with the tallest in case I ever do get real jumper (including jumping from items in the xpen). I really like the maxlock doors better than the original doors (have an xpen and 3 dog crates with the original door locks).

BTW, my 4 lb holland lop who I’ve only seen jump fairly low during binkies and a max of 6 inches or so when trying to get our hallway doorknob (still haven’t figured out that one!), jumped out the top of our new digging box last night . . . 12 inch tall box plus 7 inch flaps that were standing up and out flew bunny . . . not bad for what I thought wasn’t a jumper. . .

Hi guys, I am glad this question was asked as I was planning the same thing :3

I have another question though, how do you attach the pen to the cage? I am planning to attach a pen to my dog crate but I would like to be able to remove it so would something like bulldog clips work?

Lizzi- Bulldog clips might work ok, or you can use zip ties, just clip them away when you want to remove.

cbyrd- I hesitated earlier on replying, because I wasn’t sure about how little english lops are jumpers. I did not go with the tallest (48″) because I’m so short, however, my flemish just jumped her 42″ tall pen last night, so she now has a cover over the top to prevent her from trying again. I would say go as tall as you are comfortable with having in whatever area you plan to use, and to prevent injury use something across the top just to deter jumping altogether.

I have this exact x-pen (I even ordered from Chewy.com, they’re the best) and I love it!

I’d say the bigger the better. English lops may not love to jump very high as a trend, but you never know what your bun will like to do — or discover they CAN do!! c; Plus, English lops are pretty big, which means they can stand, and therefore jump, fairly high. Theodore, for example, never liked so much as hopping on top of a box that he could easily make, but when I got him a playpen that was too short (19″), banking on his lacking an affinity for jumping, he cleared it with ease.

Theodore is a medium-sized Dutch, and for him I have the 42″ high pen as his home pen — I ended up getting a second playpen that was taller, at 29″, and that works great for him as a playpen. The 42″ is a little overkill for him, and I got the pen because I was originally planning on adopting a much larger bunny, but I gotta say, it really puts my mind at ease knowing that there is NO way he’s going to jump over the top while I’m away.

If you don’t want to go that high, I’d say 36″ is your very bare minimum. Honestly, though, if I really were in your shoes, I’d still get the 42″. It’s a shame to buy something you think will work only to have your bun prove you wrong, and then have to spend more money on something you could’ve gotten in the first place.

I also recommend attaching (I use clothes pins, cheap wooden ones from the dollar store)  a cotton sheet to the top or half of the top of the pen. This helps discourage jumping.

                  Good luck!!

Midwest xpens come with clips that can be used to attach the xpen to a crate, condo, wall hooks, or to itself.

Personally, my Midas isn’t a jumper.. (Yet.. :/) His cage is 30″, but I have a sheet clipped to the top, just in case he decides that it would be the perfect time to try and escape while I am at school. That would be very bad.

My bun dorsnt seem to be a jumper but I caught her climing her ex pen once…. the safest bet is always to go with a taller pen (so long as youre comfortable with it) and attach a sheet to the top to create a top that discourages jumping and climbing.
