Bindi was diagnosed with an ear infection (another one!) when he went for his dental a couple of weeks ago. It’s just routine for my vet to check his ears whenever he’s in, since he gets so many infections. She put him on Baytril Otic for 2 weeks. After a week, I contacted her because it wasn’t clearing up at all, lots of goop in them and he’s doing a good deal of scratching. Also, he gets his eyes flushed regularly and my vet did it while he was in last time but it didn’t dry them up like usual.

So we went back to the vet on Tuesday to do a bacterial culture of his ears. She suspects his eyes may be related to the ear infection and that it all may tie together with his sinus issues (he has a thickened nasal bone which causes sinusitis from time to time). He’s on a new oral antibiotic, Chloramphenicol, for 7 days. The poor guy, this stuff is thick like cake batter and is flavoured but smells like cream cheese icing. Nasty stuff but he’s such a good boy.

I should hear the results of the ear culture on Monday. All theses problems are most likely due to the fact that he has a really squishy face. I know most lops do, but Bindi’s face is like, really squishy. When you look at him, side profile, it’s like flat as a board. It all adds to his extreme cuteness but the problems associated with it are very frustrating (and expensive!).

        Some vibes for Bindi appreciated.

Vibes for Bindi. He does have an adorable squishy face. It’s a shame that all that adorableness causes so many problems.

Vibes on the way for Bindi Loo and some for you too. Mimzy had to have CMP twice in his life and both times I was manic about cleaning up after dosing him and not touching the stuff because it is very dangerous medicine for people. Is this ear drops or oral suspension?
Poor wee guy just can’t catch a break with his ears. I really hope this clears everything up for him this time.

                          Thanks guys.

Mimzmum- Why is it dangerous for people? Now i’m a bit worried, I haven’t’ been washing my hands or anything.

So far, he has been okay with taking the meds. Haven’t heard from vet yet, will call this afternoon if I don’t hear today.

I’ve been watching him like a hawk. He doesn’t want to eat a lot of hay lately. I thought it was because he needed his teeth done but it didn’t improve after his dental. I currently have 4 different types of Oxbow on the go and he’s being a little stinker with all of them.

Perhaps it’s the silver sulfadiazine in Baytril otic that’s dangerous to humans. Babies musn’t come into contact with it, so you should probably wear gloves when distributing it. It can be used on people for serious burns. http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-13530-silver+sulfadiazine+top.aspx

The only thing I found about enrofloxacin (baytril) is that it may cause hallucinations in humans. http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/Documents/pharmacy-enrofloxacin.pdf So you shouldn’t ingest it yourself. But you wouldn’t do that of course.

You should perhaps ask your baby-doctor just to make absolutely sure, just so you don’t worry!

Chloremphenical was taken off the market for humans because it can cause anemia….I wouldn’t worry as long as you don’t eat the stuff though….apparently it can cause aplastic anemia but that is rare and I think you would have to ingest it. It’s a great medication though for rabbits but apparently it is very bitter – one of my vets said she tasted it to see what it tasted like…I guess she had a problem getting animals to take it. Don’t worry though she lived :~)

(((Vibes for Bind))) Good to hear that he’s not a stinker with his medicine. =] Mine gave me such the stank face when I tried to give them their antibiotics. I had to resort to mixing it with homemade bunny papaya-applesauce.

He’s done the meds now, so no need to worry. It was only a 7 day course. It didn’t seem to help his runny eyes. I don’t care about his eyes being runny, cleaning them every day is not a big thing and it doesn’t bother him. I just want to make sure it’s not the result of something else and/or going to result in something worse.

I’m getting frustrated. Vet said I should probably get results from the ear culture by Monday. I called Tuesday and still nothing. Going to call again today if I don’t hear anything. Don’t like leaving them so long with no treatment.

Could Bindi just have tear duct trouble with his eyes? Mimzy has chronic dry eye now and we use Genteal mild to medium eye drops (OTC) to keep them from becoming irritated and weepy.

Sorry to hear the meds didn’t help. I can relate to the hay fussiness but our hay has been so poor lately I kind of don’t blame the bunnies for hating it.

Hope you get those results back soon.

So I finally got the results of Bindi’s culture. No infection! I was happy to hear that, of course, but a little baffled. Apparently the 1 week of Baytril took care of it. I did notice he hasn’t been scratching his ears lately. That’s the reason it took so long for the culture, they were waiting to see if something would grow. Well, spent $100 for nothing but it was the only way to know.

His eyes are running pretty bad these last couple of days. I think it may be an older bun, chronic thing at this point. For now, I’m just going to keep them clean and see how it goes. I know it’s not his teeth because he just had those done. As long as there are no other problems, we can deal with weepy eyes.

Did you have dental X-rays in the past? It’s the tooth root that can cause probs on the duct going from eye to nose.
I know you’ve saud he’s had bone changes too so no doubt that contributes!

I actually read somewhere that runny eyes could be symptom of EC. I cannot recall where though! I really only have come across that once and was surprised to read it at the time.
I might have to hunt around online to see if there is any truth in it.

Good to hear his ears have improved.

ETA: have you tried warm compresses on his eyes? Doing that a few times a day might help.
