Young Sherlock buns has been fighting a jaw abscess for many weeks now. We were using baytril initially but today I asked if I could get filled on a different antibiotic because although the baytril worked well initially, it seemed to be wearing off, indicating that another type of culture could be flourishing in his jaw. So I picked up some azithromycin this afternoon and gave him his first dose upon coming home. He already seemed off, but it has been an hour and a half and he won’t eat or move. I gave him water through a syringe which he basically refused to swallow and am going to feed him mashed pellets soon but I am so worried.

I wanted to know if anyone has ever experienced adverse side effects using azithromycin? His stomach seems bloated or distended.

I believe that is what Wooly had the 2nd time around. It is meant for more difficult to treat infections. It can lead to a reduced appetite in some bunnies, but I never saw any problems in Wooly.

I imagine gas meds would be fine to give. They probably wouldn’t hurt any. Have you tried doing some tummy rubs?

I had a friend who said this gave her rabbit stomach cramps – I would call the vet and ask if you can reduce the dosage – this seemed to help her rabbit but allowed her to continue with the meds.

He perked up again after a couple hours and was eating fine. His stomach still seemed sensitive but he seemed much better in the morning. I gave him a little smaller dose this morning and he didn’t seem affected by it at all so hopefully it was a 1 time thing!
