Hi everyone! I got a new baby bunny on July 16 and her name is Oreo. We have absolutely NO idea what breed she is. She should be 9-weeks and 3 days old today since she turned 9-weeks on the day we got her. She still has baby fur and has VERY small light brown or beige spots behind her ears and under her chin. I think she might be a Checkered Giant but I may be wrong. So can anyone tell us? Thanks in advance!

Her fur seems very rexish from the pictures – is it velvety soft to the touch?

              I think she’s a Rex too. She’s beautiful!
She might be a Standard Rex as she looks a good size already at only 9wks old.

You might be thinking checkered giant because of the coat pattern but that look is common in many breeds.
Her colouration & pattern sounds as is she might be what’s called a “broken black otter”.

So if she got the full colour she would be have been a black otter but she carries another pattern gene that has the colour interspersed with white. Its termed as “broken” which sounds like an odd name. It’s not a negative term or faulty gene or anything. Its just a description of how a solid pattern is broken up by white. Sometimes it’s called blanket when the have a fair bit of solid colour over the back area.

Ohhh yes, her fur is EXTREMELY soft! Sometimes I can’t resist petting her because of it! Now looking at pictures of the Standard Rex, she doesn’t seem to have that rounded stance they have. When she relaxes she kind of hides her feet like that, but her normal stance is in the first picture. It might just be because she’s a baby, but I don’t know. I am very new to bunnies, as I have had only one before but she ran away after about a month and a half. She was aggressive though, and quite feral. But yes, other than the stance I do think she is a rex as well. I kind of wanted a rex, too.

Definitely a Rex and a very beautiful one!

I just adore Rex’s. It’s my fave breed. My Bridge bunny, who was my first ever rabbit, was a Mini-Rex and he had the greatest little personality. He was a very charismatic little guy and very bonded to his humans. Rex’s are also known for giving bunny kisses!!!

Then yes she is 100% a Rex. She looks like one, feels like one, and acts like one. She gives me kisses EVERY time she in near me. Yay!

I have a very special mini rex! They are awesome bunnies!

Minis usually top out at about 4-4.5 lbs full grown. Standards are bigger, up around 8 lbs or so…

You don’t seem to see many standard rexes around, most are minis.

Yes, she does get hay in her diet, although we just ran out so we need to get some more. Stickerbunny, your rex is beautiful! And beka, I had not even known that the standard rex existed until you guys told me. Also what makes pine shavings deadly? I never seem to get a clear answer when I look it up.

Pine Shavings Are not good. If you need litter, I Suggest wood pellets(for wood stoves, or horse stall bedding)

                                Very Pretty Bunny! =D

Yes^. Wood stove pellets (accelerant free) or pelleted horse bedding is very cost effective and great moisture & odour control.

Pine or cedar shavings are not recommended because they easily release aromatic oils (phenols) that can affect the liver enzymes.
                                  Aspen shavings are safe though.
Some of the pellet forms are pine but the process to form the pellets removes a lot of the harmful oils.

It’s a fantastic resource, as is Binky Bunny!

If you want to use SHAVINGS you can use aspen shavings. Another issue I have with shavings beyond the obvious phenols though is one time I bought a bag of them from the pet store (not for my bunnies) and it had broken ceramic tile all inside of it … who knows where that wood comes from or what is in it if they’re mixing what looked like kitchen or bathroom tiles in it.
