Hi everyone I’m still very new to this site and I’m hoping someone can give me some advice.  A friend of mine found a rabbit while walking her dog a few days ago. The rabbit was left on the side of the road in a tiny hamster cage!! (he’s at least 4 pounds). She doesn’t think he was out there very long he still had a little food rolling around but his water bottle was dry. She took him home with her and the poor thing is just so afraid of everything which is understandable. She setup her x-pen so he could stretch out but he wont come out of his tiny cage it’s like he’s afraid of the extra space. She removed the top of the cage so he would have a little more room but he just sits in the base all day and kicks up a fuss when she has to change out his bedding. He does not like to be handled at all he nips and scratches anytime hand come near him. Does anyone know what she can do to help him feel safe faster. I told her to give him time to adjust since we don’t know what his environment was like before. She is set to see the vet this coming Monday to check on his health and get advice from them but any suggestions would be great. Thank you…

Oh bless his heart – so glad your friend found him and he’s in safe hands.

It sounds like he would like a hidey box to help make him feel secure – if she can make one out of a cardboard box that would be good and it would be inexpensive – he would probably like that. Maybe she can find one big enough to put a litter box in for the time being.

As Sarita says, a hidey-box of cardboard, preferably with two entrances (or exits), one on each side, would be excellent.

He’s probably very scared and making him a hidey-place that has a roof under which he can feel safe can make a world of difference to a bunny.

I too am very glad you found him and brought him in.

We’ll all be very glad to help with any further issues!

So glad your friend found this little sweetheart! So sad….he’s probably very untrusting of humans. Obviously he lived with horrible people prior to being abandoned. He will definitely need lots of time to adjust and to learn to trust people.

Thank you for the advice she did make him a hidey box and he was a little unsure about it at first but he seems to like it now. She has put his small base it to a much larger one hoping to transition him slowly to a larger space. She even clipped a sheet over the top of the pen to act as roof in case he’s afraid of the openness.  I don’t think he was allowed out of his tiny cage or shown love before now the poor little guy. I’m going to visit later today to drop off some hay and see how he’s doing.

I went by to see how this little guy was doing and he seems to feel more comfortable now that he has a “roof”. He is also starting to sniff around the space the bigger base offers him. He is still afraid of people and the dogs barking but I’d be afraid of that big guy if i didn’t know what a softy he is. He has also been named Buddy since we kept calling him little buddy when we talked to him to calm him down. Hopfully he keeps making progress and the vet has good news on Monday. Thank you again for your help.

Abandoned by the side of a road? Poor thing… sounds like his past wasn’t good. Clearly his fortunes have turned to the better having met you. Give him time and best wishes to both of you. Good luck, Buddy! Keep us posted please.

Sorry it took so long but the good news is Buddy is doing so much better. At his vet visit my friend learned that he is blind in one eye but was otherwise healthy. He is such a lucky bunny considering where he was found. He has become comfortable in the larger space offered to him and only uses the small base he was found in to sleep. We were surprised when we got him a litter box because he knew exactly what it was for. It seems that the person who left him at least tried to take care of him since he was healthy and litter trained. I just hope they don’t go out and get another bunny and repeat what they did. He’s still not a fan of people (other than my friend who found him) and hides in his box when someones around or he makes sure to always have his good eye facing you when you come in the room. I’m sure in time he will become more comfortable with the sounds and smells of his new home and he will come out of his shell.

It might take him a while to trust, but it sounds like he’s doing great. Soooo glad your friend saved him and gave him a good home. Your friend is is a very special person, and so are you for helping!

I’m so glad to read this! It sounds like he had tremendous good luck in finding your friend and you! It can take a rather a long while for bunnies to come out of their shells, so patience is key.

Thank you and thank your friend for saving this little one!
