I emailed the person we bought Laura Bunny from a few weeks ago (long story short: one of her rabbits bit my 2 year old very badly while we were there…..my daughter is doing fine but I mentioned it to her doctor casually and her doctor was mortified I didn’t bring her in for a rabies shot) to ask how her the rest of the rabbits from Laura’s litter were doing (esp. the one that bit) and she said they seemed fine when they butchered and ate them for July 4    !!! I didn’t realize I was saving Laura’s life! I wish I had bought more!

          Thank you for saving Laura.

Terrible story. I’m so glad she found a home with you. It’s not possible to save as many rabbits as one would like, at least you got one bunny out of harm’s way.

Rabbits may carry rabies but it’s not common. I hope your daughter will be fine.

Rabbits do not get rabies shots. Most likely if the rabbit (or a rabbit) had rabies it would die from this disease according to one of my vets.

That is an awful thing to have had to hear but the sad fact is that these breeders will continue to breed for this reason and you cannot save them all.

Aww, that makes me so sad . Well done on saving Laura though – you definitely shouldn’t feel bad about not being able to save the others. I’m happy she has found a home with you!

That’s horrible and sad. Laura is so lucky to have you.

If the biter survived 10 days after the biting-incident without showing any signs of rabies, your daughter should be fine.

I looked it up because I was interested, I’d never heard of rabies in rabbits before. I need to write a short essay on a neurological disease for a MOOC I’m taking and I’m going to write it on rabies, so I’m thanking you. Sweden (where I live) is rabies-free but I understand the situation is different in the USA.

Rabies does seem to be EXTREMELY rare in domestic rabbits though. Aggression and biting in completely healthy un-neutered domestic rabbits is NOT rare though, esp if the bunny isn’t a pet. So I don’t think you need to worry.

                    Best of luck with Laura!

I was bit fairly badly by a wild rabbit I tried to save after it was injured on the road. Poor dude was bleeding and I took him to a vet, where he ended up being euthanized.

Anyhow, I Canada we have Telehealth, so I called and asked in I should get a rabies shot for a rabbit bite and they said no because of how low the prevalence is in rabbits. My two cents!

Be glad you could save one rabbit!

Yeah, bites from prey species are not high risk for rabies.

LB, I know you feel bad (I know I would), but knowing that Laura is safe with you will make her all that much more special.

It’s sad, but even if you could have gotten them all, the breeder would just have another litter to replace them that much sooner. You can’t stop rabbits being bred for meat and even if you buy 10, it just means 10 new ones will be born. There is really nothing you could have done.

Enjoy Laura and try not to dwell on the sad part.

Thank you everyone!! I do think my daughter will be fine. Our rabbit (who was housed with the biter–male not neutered) also hasn’t shown any signs of rabies and it’s been over a month. I did read that it’s relatively rare in rabbits so I think we’re ok….

On a happier note–we adopted a Champagne d’Argent (if you’ve read my post Smelly Bunny!!) last weekend and not only is she doing great (no more smell!) but we took her out to play for the first time yesterday. My, I have never seen so many happy jumps!!! The woman breeds her rabbits as “therapy rabbits” which I like the idea of, except that the way she says she keeps them tame is by never letting their feet touch the ground! Our little Lapine didn’t even eat the fresh clover bc she was too busy frolicking, parascoping, and checking things out! It made my heart happy

Oh Laura Bunny I bet that did make your heart happy to see how happy your bunny was.  I would have loved to see that too.

As far as I knew rabbits don’t get rabies.  Guess I was wrong.  I was speaking with someone about that the other day.  And has anyone ever seen a horse with rabies?  That would be a site.

I didn’t think herbavore animals got rabies either.  Hmmm.  Shows what i know

Any mammal can get rabies. Certain animals are higher risk, mainly predators. It is more likely that they will get into a fight with another animal and get bitten (which transmits the virus).

There was a deer in Pennsylvania just the other day that attacked a woman in front of some stores, some men came to help her and tied the deer up. It had some injuries and died, tested positive for rabies. I was shocked.

Yikes, close call for your bunny. I guess people gotta eat too, just not fun to think about.

When we adopted Obie, the worker was telling us a guy had come in before us to adopt him. But in talking to him, they found out he was planning on feeding Obie to his snake! They’re like sir, this bunny has had a hard life. We want to improve it, not end it. So glad they found out first!
