        Hello everyone!

I was just wondering, who has their bunnies microchipped?

They charged $15 at the shelter for it, and I thought why not.

My bunnies sometimes play in their outdoor pen, and I let them run around outside every day, so I guess it’ll come in handy if they ever escape one day.

Mine are microchipped, I did it because it was low cost and they were going under anasthesia anyway.

I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise because it is uncomfortable for the bun, and to be honest I don’t think it’s much use. If someone finds a stray/lost bunny, few rescues or vets would bother to check for a microchip.

I considered it for Porky. (If you search the forum my old threads there like 3 years ago.) I decided against it for 3 reasons.

            1. He wasn’t being put under anethisia for anything else, so there wasn’t one of those might as well get it all done at once moments.
2, He looks too much like a wild bunny anyway. If he ever got lost people would just comment that the wild bunnies seem to be getting chubby. He even has the white tail of the local cotton tails. If he ever gets lost people will just leave him alone.
            3. Some one mentioned it moving around under the bunnies skin and causing problems.

We don’t microchip bunnies in Sweden, but pedigree rabbits get tattooed in their ears. All dogs are chipped (or in more and more rarely, tattooed) though, and chipping cats is becoming more common, but there’s no public record of cat- or bunny owner’s the way there is with dogs.

My bunnies are not chipped or tattooed. I probably would if I had the option though.

Why do they have to put bunnies under for chipping? Not even really small dogs like chihuahua that can weigh much less than a bunny are in general anaesthesia when they’re chipped.

There aren’t any wild rabbits running around where I live (just squirrels and lizards) so someone would probably return the rabbit to me
My neighbor has a lot of rabbits though (about 15-20 rabbits, and they live outside), so I didn’t want mine to get mixed up with her group.

I did it when they got fixed they were already “sleeping”

If my rabbits ever escaped to the outside, their only hope would be that they’d come running back to me while I frantically crinkle the raisin bag or blow banana smells into the air. Otherwise, they wouldn’t last an hour before something picked them off for dinner.

I didn’t see any point since mine were all house bunnies and wouldn’t be where they could get lost or taken. I had read they could get coccidia from digging in the dirt (and them grooming), that they can get worms from dog poop, fleas & tick, etc. Since our dog is free run when she’s in our fenced in yard, and since we have lots of squirrels and deer, lots of dogs next door, I just decided it wasn’t worth the risk of raking them outside here.

If our circumstances were different and there was a risk of them being lost or stolen, I probably would have had them microchipped.

As each of mine have been desexed I have had them microchipped…. It’s unlikely they would get out but in the event they did I would like to know anyone who found them would have a way to find me.

Mine are not chipped, if they ever got out and were found, it’s highly unlikely they’d be scanned for a chip. However, we are military and stationed in Alaska. We’ve made the drive across Canada to the lower 48 and back 3 times. The first time we moved up, one of our ferrets escaped and was simply gone. This was many years ago, long before anything but dogs were regularly chipped. Now, our dogs and cat are chipped, but not the buns. *If* we make move again and have to make that drive, the buns will be chipped, as well. It may not do any good, but I would never forgive myself if something happened and they weren’t.

Mine aren’t. They are strict house bunnies and even if they had the opportunity to escape, I am confident that they wouldn’t try. They like to stay where the food is.

One of mine is, and the other one isn’t. The local humane society microchips every rabbit that goes through, but I got my first rabbit in another city from a shelter that doesn’t do it. I’ve brought my bunny outside to play maybe twice in his life, and probably won’t again, since I don’t have a yard anymore and now I’m paranoid of all the diseases outside.
And if they did escape… well, my little girl would probably hide so well that no human would find her, and my boy isn’t afraid of anything. Not even dogs. So… he wouldn’t last very long.

Mine isn’t. When she was spayed, it didn’t even cross my mind.

I have heard people recommend it in high-risk areas, places where hurricane/earthquake/severe weather evacuations are commonplace. In that case I might consider it.

I CAN’T for Henry – but I’ve never had my dog’s done either. They are house pets and our yard (fence) is secure even for Henry IF he ever went outside which I doubt he ever would. Sometimes I leave the door open to quickly grab something and he won’t leave the doormat – outside is tooo scary for him. He see’s the dog’s go out through the doggy door and he’s never attempted it. I have to be honest, I’ve never thought or worried about Henry getting out and about. But lets say he did and got out of our yard…. ditto manic (post)!
                                Cheers Mocha.
