Since a failed attempt at bonding, occasionally my 1 year old neutered male bunny has been growling, charging and nipping when we stop petting him.  It seems like he’s trying to assert himself as top bunny.  It only seems to happen when we initiate petting, rather than the other way around.  I’m not sure exactly what the right approach is to best deal with this.  I don’t want to scare him or make him think his place in the family is insecure, but I also don’t want this behavior to continue.

He can be so affectionate, but he doesn’t always have the best timing.  This morning he woke me up at 2 am by licking my face and snuggling up to me. I am now extremely tired, but I also can’t believe how much I love this little bunny.

I’m sure he would love to be in charge.  He also just did it to my son when he refused to let him outside.

I’m wondering though if this might be a sign that bonding is just not going to work.

Do you mean bonding with you?

No, with another spayed female rabbit. He’s definitely bonded to us.

Well, it might work, but it sounds like he is just fine on his own.

Yep, that’s what I’m thinking. We are gone a lot though during the school year.
