I’ve been getting together a bunny care & emergency “kit”. I can’t find anything in the baby section that is only simethicone. For those of you who have given this to your bunny at home, what brand do you buy? (Literally, what does it say on the box or bottle?) Also, how do you know how much to give?

I asked our vet about it and all she said was that if the bunny needs it then the bunny needs to be seen. That’s all fine and dandy, if our vet was open at night . . . I’d still feel better having things on hand in case there’s an emergency and no one’s open (ex. Hurricane, etc).

        Thanks!

I just found this brand which would be suitable. Equate Infant Simethicone.
          http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Simethicone-Infants-Gas-Relief-20mg-Drops-1-oz/10324604

Most the US infant gas products are 20-40mg/ml simethicone it appears.

          Another is Infant Myelicon.

For relief of acute gas pain, 1-2 cc (20mg/ml suspension) can be given as often as every hour for three doses, then 1 cc every three to eight hours.

That is the dosage recommendation according to this article: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
Well worth having a printed copy to put in with your E-kit.

          Hope this helps.

We got the Walmart brand, “equate”. On the bottle it says “Infants’ Gas Relief”. Underneath that, it says “Simethicone 20 mg”. Ours is a 1 fl oz bottle, not sure if there are bigger bottles.

As for dosage, this is what I found on BB:

“For relief of acute gas pain, 1-2 cc (20mg/ml suspension) can be given as often as every hour for three doses, then 1 cc every three to eight hours.”

When Oscar has a stomachache, the first dose usually takes care of it.

I use “Ovol” brand. I get it at the pharmacy. It’s not in the baby section, though, it’s in the digestive medicine section.

Simethicone is unique in that it works to break down the gas if gas is present. If there is no gas, it doesn’t do anything, but there is no adverse effect if you give it. It is very safe for rabbits.

We recommend that if there is a digestive issue that disrupts pooping/eating for 12-24 hours, you take your bunny to the vet, but the simethicone is very good to have on hand for that in-between time (or like you said, if the bunny starts showing symptoms in the middle of the night and it’s not yet “emergency” status).

I’ve always just had the store brand on hand.
