My beautiful dwarf bun Yoshimitsu is a fantastic creature. I’ve had him for two months and litter training was easy, I use perfume to keep him away from things he shouldn’t be sniffing at (Juicy Couture works for me the best!) and he comes to cuddle on my lap when he feels like it. My question is, has anyone trained their buns to come to their name? How long does it take? Does it work? I have seen with my own eyes that rabbits are very smart creatures, (Especially mine in particular!) but how well do they train?

        Thanks guys!

Rabbits Are Very Trainable, It May Take Awhile But your Rabbit Should Learn Over Time Come To It’s Name.

I knew they can be trained to do agility, I saw on youtube when I first decided to get a rabbit. Have you trained any to come to their name? Any hints or tricks?

Yes you can train them to come to their name. I used treats with my Mr Jingles. I touch the carpet or spot I want him to get to and say come. It took about a week of doing this over and over again for him to get it. Even when he is mad and runs away from me, he will still listen when I say come Mr jingles. He also understands out. He loves to go in the closet where his treats r every time I open the door, he us in so I always have to say out. If u reward him, he will get it.

Yup! My bunny knows her name, I started training her to respond to it as soon as I got her. She’s very smart and picked up quickly, took less than a week. Her favorite treats are in a bag, so I’d shake the bag as I call her name, when she comes running over I’d give her a treat. I’d never give her a treat unless she came when I called her. She knows a couple other words too like “Off” and “Stop” though it might just be my tone of voice that she understands. A couple weeks ago I started training her to jump over and run through her tunnel. Though it hasn’t been consistent training she picked it up pretty quickly. But my bun kinda has an attitude, she’ll only do stuff if she feels like it.

My guy comes to his name very reliably. I just used pellets to train this to start (he LOVES pellets).

I also treat trained him to jump over obstacles and come to a matt and “stand up” on it. It was very easy with treat motivation. I back that off over time, so he doesn’t get to aggressive!

[edited by RP] Standard, your reply, though probably a joke, was not helpful to this post and has been edited out. Sorry.

My girl doesn’t seem to have the best hearing, so I teach her tricks with visual cues instead of verbal ones. I’ve taught her to come when I tap the floor. The downside to this is that if she can’t see the cue, she can’t react to it. So in emergency situations, t may be less useful. If you can teach a verbal cue, that would be most ideal.

LopLove — what would you do in an emergency situation and bunny is hiding? I’m curious because my Moshi is deaf. I “announce” myself when I enter the bunny room by turning on the light (even during the day), but if there was no power or the room was smokey he wouldn’t be able to see the light.

JackRabbit – in an emergency situation where she’s hiding, I would have to resort to “shooing” her out of the hiding spot. DX It sucks because that action prompts her to run away from me. In the best emergency scenario, she would be in her condo, and I could just scoop her up.

Something that sometimes works for me, but not always, is getting out a smelly treat, like Oxbows freeze-dried strawberries and waving them around. XD But I imagine in a smoky room, that wouldn’t do much either.

My window blinds are always open, so turning on the light for me wouldn’t make much of a difference. I usually try to enter the room slowly for her, but she still startles occasionally. I think she’s still getting used to the shape of my summer wardrobe (drapey skirts seem to set off that reaction the most). >.<

I already had an emergency situation about a year ago (before I had taught her some visual cues. It’s because of this that I even thought to try that.) when she ate a large piece of ribbon. I spent about 30 minutes chasing her, trying to get her in the carry cage. In a more mundane situation, I would put veggies and kibble in the cage and just play the waiting game.

The blinds in my bunny room are always open too but my house faces east so the room is only bright in the morning. I think the light thing works for us, even in the morning, because of a few shadow changes near the litterboxes/hayfeeders (where there’s food, there’s Moshi!). Still wouldn’t help in an emergency. I’ve been trying to come up with a “vibration” announcement too but haven’t gotten very far — stomping on the floor might get Moshi’s attention but would scare Marlee.
