Hi – wondering if my rabbit could have early signs of mites? Attila the Bun just came home from the pet store a few days ago, and seems to be scratching and grooming himself pretty often, including scratching at his ears. He will also flick his head around and shake his body, which I thought at first was normal binkying or playing, but I’m wondering if it might be something irritating him. If it is mites, I’d like to get rid of them before they get much worse. Thanks for any advice!

I’d say mites is a distinct possibility coming from a pet shop… The best treatment for that is revolution puppy and kitten under 2.5 kg (selamectin) however first I would have your bun to the vet for a general check up so you have a point of reference for later health checks and to make sure Attila doesn’t have any existing and treatable conditions that came with him from the breeders to the pet store.

I agree with Roberta. It’s always best to get a new pet checked out by the vet. Your vet can also give you some Revolution which is bunny safe and will take care of any nasty crawlies he may have.

Good idea, I’ll take him in for a check-up. Thanks!

Oh BTW – NEVER use Frontline it is highly toxic to rabbits… Another good reason to involve your vet with selecting the right product although I have always used Revolution P & K on mine and never had a problem.
