Having recently lost my first bunny, Remy, I didn’t plan on getting another rabbit anytime soon.  The bunny gods had other plans, however and I just this morning put in an adoption application for Angstrom & Kisses, the bunnies in my signature!  I have my fingers crossed and will keep everyone updated throughout and after the adoption process takes place should we be accepted!  They are even running a deal where when you adopt a pair, you can get a 48″ x-pen for $20!  I’m not sure if we will be taking advantage of this or just putting the money in vet funds, however.  Ears crossed, everybunny!

Oh yes keep us posted! The pen can come in handy even if you don’t use it for housing. Great option for when you might need to leave the buns with someone while you are away…just something to think about. I have two extra playpens, and while I don’t use them on a regular basis I like knowing I have that option if needed and I wouldn’t have to go out and buy something should something come up. run on sentence over.

We just ran into a bit of a financial issue so we are trying to figure out how to come up with the adoption fee ($70) right now. We have $1500 set aside for vet funds but we don’t want to dip into that. If all goes well, I will have $30 at the end of this week, we can take out $20 Friday when we are paid and then the following paycheck (two weeks after this Friday) I can pull out $20 as well. Ang and Kisses have to be transported from four hours away where the rescue is to about an hour away from where we live so we don’t have to drive so far to go get them. Here is the response to my application, however –

“Everything on the application looks FANTASTIC. They will be so happy! They currently live in an ex-pen in my laundry room, so I know they will be happy to have more room AND attention, especially Angstrom!”

(Seriously, all these members getting new buns. I already want to get a companion for Moxie bad enough, why are you all tempting me? ha ha ha. Keep adopting everyone!)

I finally got their ages, Ang is 2-3 years old and Kisses was actually born at the rescue (she was adopted out and returned bonded with Ang) on January 24th, 2013. I think I will make Ang’s third birthday the day I adopt them.

So I now have another matter weighing heavy on my mind. This rescue has a mini lop named Napoleon listed with the following description –

“Napoleon (formerly Charlie) thinks he is the king of the castle! He is very bold and inquisitive, with a strong personality. He does NOT like to be picked up, and is not afraid to tell you (with a strong nip) if he’s unhappy when you either go to pick him up or are holding him. As long as he doesn’t think you are trying to pick him up, he will sit for a while for you to pet him on the head, and when he settles you can pet him all over. He is full of personality, but is not for children or a beginner bunny owner.”

Now, to me, this screams DON’T ADOPT ME! And I am very concerned. I’m considering asking Wendy to do a speed date with Napoleon, Ang and Kisses. He really hit me in a soft spot and I do feel capable of caring for him despite being a newer bunny owner. I would prefer a bonded trio rather than a duo and a single bun for the sake of free-roam time. What are you guys’ thoughts?

ETA – I e-mailed her and asked her if a speed-date was possible and about the adoption fee for three buns.  I threw out an offer of $90 (the duo will be $70) and I will buy an x-pen (so $110 total) but it’s her rescue and the adoption fees keep it going so it’s ultimately her decision.  I’ve been sick to my stomach thinking about him ‘since I applied for A&K.  Is there a huge difference between owning 2 and 3 buns?

I think that having 3 would have good benifits. Let’s say 1 of them died, and you only had 2. The living bun would get depressed, and unhappy. (this may be totally false but I’ve heard they can die of a broken heart.)
But if you had 3, the buns could comfort each other, and it wouldn’t be so hard for them to handle.
Another plus: You save a bun, that I personally don’t think will get adopted anytime soon due to the discription of him.
                            Good luck

Bonding would also be significantly easier seeing as they are all coming into a neutral territory.

(and angstrom and kisses are already bonded, so it’s really on Napoleon you need to add into the group.)

You should seriously consider talking with some of the experienced BB bonders before jumping in with three new buns so that you get a good feel for what it takes and what to be prepared for. Keep in mind also that two buns require twice the space and potentially twice the vet reserve fund, and three buns triples things. Not trying to discourage, just trying to prepare you.

Here is the e-mail I recieved back from the rescue regarding Napoleon –
“Napoleon generally fights even through the playpens at Care Day, so a speed date – especially with another male who is dominant over the girl – would probably not be a great idea. However, as you said, it may be a really long time before someone would take him on due to his strong personality. He is GREAT in general, just not in his cage or sometimes when you walk into his playpen. At his current foster home he has to be kept away from the other bun’s cage of course but otherwise comes up to see you, wants to be petted, etc. He’s just hard to read due to those adorable little floppy ears, and even then he gives very little warning before he does bite. I actually have a scar on my chest from where he bit me through my shirt while holding him!

Since you’d be adopting a 3rd, we would only ask the spay/neuter cost for him which would be $25 more. The exercise pens are the 8x 24″ wide panels, and we have I believe both 30″ and 36″ tall ones. They are black in color, no gate though.

We would love to see him go to a bunny-savvy home where he could just be his bunny-self as well as hopes of bringing out the good side of his strong personality.

I am still interested in taking him and with our one bedroom apartment being essentially split in half, I am thinking I will keep him in the kitchen/dining area and Ang & Kisses in the bedroom/living room area? I told her I would want to foster-to-adopt him just because I’ve never been in a situation I have to keep animals separated like this. I also inquired about getting two x-pens. I’m so excited to meet my new babies but I would really like some opinions on the Napoleon situation. Thank you!

Honestly I would do either the pair or Napoleon…don’t try to take on too much at once. It sounds as if Napoleon is very territorial and if you have never tried bonding, it’s time consuming and stressful.

With the new information on Napoleon, I wouldn’t be bonding them, Sarita. They would be kept as separates.

Wow, three bunnies! That’s a load all at once, but if you think you’re up for it, I think it would be great for these three to go to such a wonderful home! Poor Napoleon, you’re probably right, he might stay at the shelter a long time considering his personality/behavior. I can’t help but think that if our Oscar ended up at a shelter, his description would say pretty much the same thing… Which is why, even though I wish he was more friendly and not as aggressive, I’m very glad that we adopted him. I hate to think what would have happened had a family with children taken him home.

But I did love the username Remy too. Do you mind me asking (I am SO sorry if I shouldn’t?) is it cause using her name was too painful? I get that – again, I am SO sorry. Take care Flint.

Yes, AndHenry, I do also have a three and a half month old daughter. (; Aliceander is a wonderful baby, though. I am also a full-time student (online) and I have to clean the house daily and make dinner!! It will be awesome to have bunnies throughout the entire house, though. (: I will be clicker and agility training them as well. I’m hoping it’ll help Napoleon’s strong personality calm down a bit.

I did change my username due to Remy’s passing. It is still very hard not having her here.

We also have two large dogs – 65lbs and 85lbs! They live outside, though.

I am going to get a 36″ xpen and two 30″ x pens. For Ang and Kisses, I will put a 30″ xpen on top of their cage and use the extra panels inside to make a second level in their dog crate and cut wires out to give access to the top as well. I will also keep a 30″ xpen to put at the opening of their cage so they can come out when we aren’t home. The 36″ xpen will be Napoleon’s cage.

I decided against the triple-decker cage for A&K so I will just be getting two x-pens – a 30″ high extention for A&K to get out in when we aren’t home or when I’m a bit too busy with Aliceander or cleaning to watch them and a 36″ high x-pen for Napoleon to live in. There aren’t nearly as many cords in the kitchen area as there are in the bedroom so he is fine unsupervised. I’m ready for them to come home NAOW! I want my babies! The owner of the rescue informed me she actually has a scar from Napoleon biting her…. Wow. Makes me feel soooo much better I’m giving him a good home.

I am going back and forth on Napoleon. I requested that another bunny, Clover, be introduced to Ang and Kisses and it’s being done hopefully today. I know I am committed to three buns I just don’t know that I am committed to a pair and a single bun. I still have the better part of a month to get things straight but I am hoping things go well with Clover.
