Sorry for posting if it’s in the wrong forum, but I just wondered if anyone has any experience of the situation we’ve recently faced.

We lost our beautiful mini rex fur baby early hours Wednesday morning aged just 4 months, to say I’m devastated is an understatement. He had been ‘unwell’ and loosing weight for about a week, but despite 3 vet visits, no diagnosis was given, but following my own research I believe we may have lost him to wobbly leg syndrome. He had been loosing weight, was lethargic and went off his food in the days before we lost him. Vets put him in antibiotics and painkillers, but neither had any affect. Just before he passed he couldn’t stand and seemed to loose his strength in his legs, and when I found him half an hour before he passed he was pushing himself round in the sawdust on his side struggling. He later died warm in my arms being held safe and warm. As a first time bunny mummy, I don’t know what I did wrong. We do have a dog, who goes on the grass so wonder if eating contaminated grass may have caused his death? I would never have let him out had I of known this, was a possibility, but how can I prevent something I don’t know

My next question is, do you think it would happen again? I wouldn’t want to risk losing another fur baby in such an awful way if there was,a chance it would happen well just sell the hutch and live with the memories.

Thank you Thor any help and advice, I’d call the vets to ask, but I’m not sure I could get the words out. :'(

        Thank you xxx

Oh wendyc, I am so sad that you lost your precious boy bunny, and everything that you both had to endure just breaks my heart. Sometimes these things just happen. If your vet wasn’t sure of his illness which led to his loss, I think the only thing you should be thinking of is that you loved him and he passed away comfortably, secure and warm in your arms. Please don’t blame yourself – if your vet wasn’t able to diagnose and treat him, I know there would have been little if anything you could have done. I think holding and loving him was more important than anything you could have offered him in that short time.
I am no expert on bunnies, but my Henry has dog companions and he has never showed any ill affects from them. It’s not recommended that bunnies eat grass that dog’s toilet on, why I keep my Henry indoor’s only. Was your baby an indoor bunny? If so, next time just keep your bunny safely inside, they don’t need to go or be outside for any reason. If your boy was an outdoor bunny, maybe consider keeping your new bunny inside, safe and secure at all times. The outside world can be scary place for domesticated bunny’s. Anyhow, don’t give up on bunny ownership, it is such a joy (as you know). Again, I am so sorry for your loss wendyc. Take care.

I am so sorry for your loss. How heartbreaking.

Did your vet check for Coccidia? That’s what this sounds like, this isn’t uncommon with baby bunnies, and it can be fatal if not caught and treated correctly.

I don’t think you did anything wrong, so please don’t beat yourself up over this.
