I woke up this morning and couldn’t see Remy in her cage.  I went over and investigated and she was shoved behind the litterbox.  I shoo’d her out and didn’t think much of it,  I’m sitting on the couch watching tv and she starts running laps in her cage.  This typically means she wants out so I went over to unlatch the door and she ran to the corner and started thumping.  I unlatched the door and walked away to give her space.  She ran from the corner and tried to jump in her litter box only to catch her back feet and belly flop right on the edge, poor baby.  This of course scared her and she front-flipped into the litter box then ran back out straight into the side of the cage.  I don’t know what’s wrong and my husband has the car so I can’t take her to a vet until he gets off work.  I’m really scared!  What’s happening and what can I do to comfort her?

It’s hard to know – how is she acting now? Do you think she just got startled? Have you taken her out to see how she is out of the cage?

She is trying to get out of the cage (the door is wide open) but keeps headbutting the sides instead. Should I try to remove her from the cage? I try not to take her out of it but if you think it will help I will.

I think that would be a good idea to see how she is outside the cage.

She ran into a few walls then flopped.  She’s drooling.  I’m having an anxiety attack I don’t know what to do.

This does not sound good. I think if you can keep her confined and keep her warm until your husband gets off work – in the meantime, I would phone the vet and explain the situation and that you will be in after your husband gets off work.

They said it sounds like she got into poison but she has been caged all night and she is in a corner away from everything. Actually in our living room and all of our poison is under the sink in the kitchen with the cleaners. She has no access to anything bad for her.

I wonder if it could be an ear infection too? That can cause the uncoordination (not sure that is a word).

I think it could be possible – of course this is just speculation on my part – I’m just thinking of things that could cause the un-coordination – another possibility could be e. cunniculi but again, it’s just speculation.

Will you be able to get her to the vet when your husband gets home?

She appears to have lost all eyesight. I can wave my hand in front of her face and she doesn’t move. For a pretty timid rabbit, this is not normal. She also sways her whole body to the point of almost falling over when she walks. She’s just sitting in her cage right now in the “meatloaf” position as I like to call it. All feet tucked under with her head up but in a relaxed position. I don’t know that we will make it to the vet tonight. /:

It’s very difficult for me to tell too much just based on this video. Her head doesn’t appear tilted – just based on what I see here.

                                        Is she eating?

No, she moves like that (falling and dragging feet) when prompted but is otherwise sitting with her head rested sideways on the ground.

It sounds like it could be either the ear infection or e. cunniculi. I would talk to the vet about those possibilities.

Usually they will prescribe an antibiotic and a dewormer (for e. cunniculi) if that is what they think the problem is.

I’m almost thinking a stroke or something-she seems really ‘neuro’ -it’s not a one sided thing. But that’s just a guess. I’m sending lots of vibes and hoping you can update us soon!

I woke up this morning and really thought she was dead. I opened her cage, she didn’t move, I stroked her, she didn’t even open her eyes, I picked her up and she was a total rag doll but finally opened her eyes. Seeing as we can no longer make it to the vet and she is in very obvious pain, when my husband gets home from work before he heads out to the airport to leave for the weekend, he is going to take her out to a sugar cane field and end her suffering. I have her wrapped up in a towel in my lap right now and I am comforting her to the best of my ability for the next few hours I have with her. I’m sorry I couldn’t offer better news, everyone.

I don’t know what you mean about the sugar cane field but that doesn’t sound good to me :~( I think any vet would be able to humanely euthanize her even if they don’t have rabbit experience.

Unfortunately cane fields are a common thing out here in the country. She wouldn’t feel anything either way – the cane field or the vet. We just can’t let her suffer like this.

Do you mind me asking (sorry for my ignorance), but what is meant by a cane field (where cane (like sugar cane?) grow’s in a field???) and the vet? I don’t understand? Not that it matters (I’m just curious), your poor Remy in no longer with you – so sad, poor baby. Take care.
