        Hey all!

I am new to the wonderful world of buns! I have had ferrets in the past and am the current momma to 6 sugar gliders, 3 dogs, 2 cats, a bearded dragon, and as of Saturday, a Holland lop! I am a bit research crazy and can never learn enough!

He is a sweet and awesome little boy and is about 4 months old. We are calling him Storm (short for Stormageddon, if you get the reference!) right now! He is not yet litter box trained but we are working on it, slowly!

I ordered the stuff to make his NIC cage prior to bringing him home and I’ve been working on it for two days straight. All I have left now is to sand the edges of the maple plywood for the shelves, lay the linoleum on it, and then zip tie the wood to the grids! The floor of the cage is made of fake wood panels we had left from the dining room floor. I think eventually I will build a base with 3 inch sides to place it in… but for now I wanted a large door for getting in to clean.

What I’m wondering, I guess, is whether or not I should build ramps to each shelf for the little guy or if he can safely clear 14 inches! He was the runt of his litter, or so his previous owner told me! I haven’t weighed him yet but he doesn’t seem that unusually small for a Holland!

I’m also wondering how (if you worry about it) everyone gets their zip ties smooth? They feel like little death traps after I cut them! I tried to sand them down but no luck…I turned them all to the outside but I worry about everything

I’d be open to any other questions/concerns/suggestions, too! I always like to learn new things! I think we will be getting him a friend in the next month or so, too! :]

Here’s a picture of the cage so far! And one of little Storm!

          Dark Lord of All!

          hahaha, nice reference

          Can’t see the picture though

Well for the zip ties I did the same, turned them outwards or on the shelves, upwards so they were under the carpet on the shelf.

Who knows if he’ll be a jumper! One of mine is and can clear 2 grids, no idea what breed but tbh he looks like a wild rabbit in everything but colour! My other bunny is a lionlop, so a bit of a more relaxed breed (according to our vet!) and it took her until she was 4 months to start jumping onto things and still she is tentative about it. What we did is put a cardboard box under the shelves so she could jump onto the box (half the height of one panel) then onto the shelf. We built a little ramp onto the top shelf with some wood and zip tied it onto the shelf and the side of the cage for safety.
However she can definitely jump the 14 inches now and rarely uses the ramp!

Oh, make sure to get him neutered and wait 4-6 weeks after before introducing him to a friend (especially if it’s an unspayed female!)

            Thanks for your reply!!

I am a huge Doctor Who fan and it seems to fit him, so far! LOL

I edited my original post to fix the pictures… it’s showing them to me in my preview and everything but then my actual post shows the HTML plus a download link for one of the two pictures… I deleted everything and started again, so hopefully it’s fixed!!

I will try without the ramps initially, then! I am sure I can find him a hidey house to set on each level to use as steps if he needs to. I worry about his jump down to a hard surface… but I guess they are built for that…I just worry too much!

            Thanks for your tips!

I will definitely be having him neutered if I get him a friend. I am hoping to find a companion that is already spayed or neutered… but no such luck so far!
