Hello! My six year old Dutch bunny Kiwi was playing around today in the living room, and he smacked his back right foot on a plastic storage container. It made quite a loud thud, so it must’ve been a hard hit. He then started limping around and not putting weight on his foot when hoping. I put him back in his cage, and he will put a little weight on his foot while siting, but not too much. He seems to be eating still, and even played with his toys a little bit, which is a good sign, but I’m worried about him. His leg doesn’t look like it’s swelled up or anything, so I’m hoping that it’s maybe just sore? It seems unlikely to me that hitting a plastic container would cause him to break anything, but it still makes me nervous.

I’m trying really hard not to panic here, but how long should I give him to rest on his own? I was going to wait 24 hours and see if he’s any better tomorrow before calling the vet. Thanks!

I think as long as he is eating and drinking, it is not unreasonable to see how he is in 24 hours. If he is still limping then it would be good to see the vet, just in case he bruised it – he may need some pain meds or anti inflammation meds if he is still limping.

yes if still limping tomorrow get him checked out.
consider yourself luckily that it happened on a monday. most bunny emergencies tend to occur after vet hours on a friday

when we had thumper he had a day when he was limping and we didn’t know what he did to his foot so we took him to the vet that day and the vet said that he pulled a muscle and all he did was moved his back leg around in a circle. he moved it that hard i thought he was going pull his leg off but after that he was running around like nothing happened. just keep an eye on it and if he doesn’t put weight on it take him to the vets.

Thanks so much for replying! Kiwi has stayed in his cage for the rest of the day, and he already seems to be doing better. Not back to hoping completely normal yet, but he is using his foot now. Hopefully it was just sore and with a couple more days of rest he will be back to normal.
