Hello! I’m new here so I hope I’m posting in the right spot!

My 8 year old Lionshead rabbits has a horseshoe shaped cut on his side. It looks like it is healing up fine, but I cannot figure out what it is from. I checked all throughout his enclosure for any sharp edges that could scrape him, but I can’t find anything. So I tried to research to see if it is anything to be worried about and didn’t find much except it could be from grooming himself.

He had the same kind of cut a few months before and it healed up perfectly, but the strange thing is that his current cut is right next to it. In the pictures, you can see where the healed cut was because it’s growing new black fur and the new cut is right next to it.

Any ideas of what this could be?

        Thanks!

Is this your only bun or do you have others… It’s just it looks like a bite..
I would take your bun in to the vet and get it looked at as the only other thing I can think it might be is a spot where there has been a small abcess or growth which your bun has bitten during grooming.

I do have another rabbit, but they do not live together. I took him to the vets last time and she said it was nothing to worry about, but now that there’s another, it may be a different story. Thank you for responding.

I agree with Roberta, it looks like a (bunny) bite. Do your rabbits have access to each others enclosures? Could the other bunny have bitten this one through the cage bars? Since it’s in the same location, I’m thinking maybe he lays down against the cage bars and gets bitten in that spot?

Hazel, they do not have access to each other. He is too old to get fixed, so they are in separate locations. Could he be biting himself?

He could have bitten himself, if there was something irritating him, like mites. Have you noticed him scratching lately?

I rarely see him itching. He cleans himself a lot, but there isn’t much scratching or biting. It is healing up beautifully and quickly though. Do you think I should take him to the vets, just to be safe?

Yes I would. Check his teeth there in case they are overgrown. Looks like a bite, and he may be reaching that place himself. You don’t want an infection, so the vet might have a topical treatment.
