        Hi guys,

I have a question about farm hays. I order my hay from timothyhay.co.uk (I am in the UK) and my bunnies love it.

However, I have recently heard that unfiltered farm hays can bring lice and things into the house which isn’t good for any of us really especially not good for the rabbits (I don’t know if this hay is filtered or not). Anyway, is this true?? Can farm hays be potentially unsafe for the rabbits?

It would be such a shame to stop buying this hay as it is a lot cheaper than store bought timothy hay and I have a very fussy eater who cannot get enough of this stuff.

         Thank you for any replies

I sure hope farm hay is safe for bunnies! I order all of my hay from a small farm in California.

I don’t see how farm hay could be bad. I buy my hay from two different farms in California. They’re both tailored to small pets. So I don’t know if there is a difference in roughness. And if that would be bad. It doesn’t matter where you buy your hay from (store or farm) in my experience they both run the risk of bringing in fleas or any sort of insect. I would buy hay based on how fresh it is. I noticed that store bought hay (at least here in the U.S.) is not great quality.

Living close to the Western Australian wheat belt I get local hay… I have had to buy farm baled hay recently due to ongoing problems with the bagged hay… So far I have never had a problem with the bales where as the bagged has been constantly beset with issues of mites, mould and just poor quality. The baled is also lovely and green.

Farm hay is fine. Ya, it can bring mites and stuff in, but those are so small, a filtering isn’t going to get them out. If your bunnies like it, it’s great!

It is such good quality hay from Scotland. Some shop packed hays are ok but most here in the UK Neji puts his nose up to. I still can’t beleive how much he likes this hay. He has the most perfect poops now! haha, gross.
                  ….I worry too much…haha.
