I really thought that I had a few more days to prepare for this..but, one of our neighbors is popping some fireworks. Sienna was laying in his kennel, (his favorite sleeping spot) when we heard them, and he tensed up. I went and grabbed a blanket to cover his kennel with, and he was out of the crate, shaking and looking wide-eyed and all panicky and tensed up. I lured him in to his crate and shut it, so right now he is kind of sniffing at the blanket. Any tips on how to keep him calm? I feel so bad for him. Luckily, we won’t be shooting off an fireworks this year for the 4th of July, because I have a phobia of fire..(and I have asthma, so no smoke.) But, I cannot stop my neighbors from doing anything. .

Hmm, no advice here. Sorry. Since Leopold is deaf, he doesn’t react. His lack of reaction seems to calm Wooly.

Curious about this too. So far my buns haven’t reacted to thunder, but we’re having a storm right now and my pior dog is wearing her Thunder Shirt, hiding in the downstairs bathroom and shaking like crazy. Without the Thunder Shirt her teeth even chatter.

Make sure they have plenty of boxes or houses to hide, and cover the cage with a blanket. Close all windows/curtains and make sure they have easy access to food from their hidey houses. You could also give them some calming herbs. (I have no idea what they are)

I would also increase the noise level and activity -inside- the house a little bit if possible. TV/radio/fans are great for desensitizing. Still have a couple weeks yet before the massive celebrating happens, after a few days of television watching, Sienna’s tolerance should increase.

Here’s a link to some fire-works sounds, you can play this on your computer and increase the sound gradually so as to desenzitize your bunny to these noises. It’s a common practice with dogs. I had a CD with fireworks-noise for my dog when she was a puppy, but since she’s not of a breed that is sensitive to thunder and sounds of gunfire etc, I don’t know if the CD helped or not. She’s utterly unafraid of fireworks and thunder though, so at least I know it didn’t hurt. The text is in Norwegian but if you don’t like that you can perhaps google some other video. It basically just says to play this vid as often as you can and in good time before the fireworks happen irl. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ4KNrOsRLU&feature=kp

Hiding-places are good of course. Yesterday we had heavy thunder here and Yohio (bunny) hid under my bed for the duration of it. Then he came out again, happy as a little yellow bunny can be.
