Everyone where I live is going crazy! The mosquitoes are absolutely HORRIBLE! You can’t walk outside without having 15 swarming you! I’ve been chewed alive this year! It’s do bad I will wake up in the night and can’t fall back asleep because I’m so itchy! Because they are so bad outside, we have a lot in our house. It’s so sad to see them swarming the rabbits. I know Myxomatosis has been found in the US and that terrifies me! Does anyone know if it had been found in Wisconsin yet? The reason for this post wasn’t to rant about our mosquitoes but to ask how i can get rid of them inside. Do you know if any safe natural mosquito repellents? Can’t be anything that smells because my Mom is very allergic to stuff. Any ideas?

Hi, Mocha! I hate mosquitos, so sympathize.
First, call a local vet to ask if it’s been in Wisconsin yet. Docs usually get heads up alerts for things like that.

Second, 2 natural remedy for itching after you’ve been bitten are: boiled tea bags, cooled down to room temp. and applied onto the bite. The (tanin?) in tea stops the itching. OR, just use straight rubbing alcohol, dabbed on it. I find that really stops the itching and is very easy.

There’s something you can set out in a dish, like lemon juice in water, that helps. I have to go look it up.

OK, here’s a pretty good article with lots of different suggestions:

I’m thinking that the buns can have a tight net drawn across the top of their habitat to keep them out.

Probably need to be more concerned with West Nile Virus.

Are they getting into your house? I would make sure there is not any standing water outside – that attracts mosquitoes.

I’ve always used white vinegar to stop the itching. Just pour it on directly.

Pam: the bunnies are free range in the bunny room so they don’t have a cage I could put a net on.

Sarita: We live on a lake so we have a lot of water outside… :/

I’ve heard that coffee grounds in a dish could help or even live herbs like basil. Maybe just keeping them out of the bunny room will help.

Our door leading to the outside is always covered with mosquitoes. We try to come in through the garage but some still get in…

Mosquitoes hate lavender so you could spread some of that around especially where there is foot traffic so it is being crushed and releasing the oils.. Plant bushes near the windows and doors in pots so people brush against it as they pass to release the oils…. To keep them off yourself mix a little pure lavender oil in a plain moisturiser like sorbelene and apply it to your arms legs and torso twice a day… Lavender is bunny safe so you can put fresh sprigs in the bunny room… Also check out your local KMart, Target, Walmart or similar for a bug zapper… You can get good ones quite cheaply these days. I got one at KMart for $20 which down here is very inexpensive… I know the cost of similar ites in the USA is considerably cheaper than Australia so you could probably find one for about $10. You can get solar ones for outside and electric ones for inside… I live by a lake too.

I sympathize, living in Alaska we wind up trying everything possible to get rid of our “state bird”. They’ve been particularly nasty for the last few years, to the point that they now fly in my face to stop me from walking so the following horde can catch up and mob me.
There used to be something on the market called the “Mosquito Magnet” that was supposed to be effective for trapping them but it’s pretty expensive. I mostly just bundle up to the nines to go out for dog walks and try to time it so that it’s during their lay down time. Other than that, screens across doors and windows have to be sealed constantly to keep the buggers from getting in. Yes…we use duct tape, the handyman’s secret weapon. Any opening and the smallest ones get in and there’s no peace after that.
I also can’t tolerate any kind of bug dope…it makes me physically ill. And of course I swell like crazy wherever I’m bitten.
I think Pam is spot on with the zapper. You can also get these little paddles that look like mini tennis rackets to whack them with an electrical charge. They take two AA batteries. Good for flies too, which you defo don’t want near your bunnies.
This is something like the one we have:
                            http://www.harborfreight.com/Electronic-Fly-Swatter-61351.html
I’ve heard you’re not supposed to keep/eat bananas during mozzie season because the smell attracts them…not sure how relevant that is though.
I also haven’t heard anything about myxi except a possible strain on the west coast, which is daunting for me since we’re moving there in future with my three…I will not be a happy bunny about that.
Good luck and whack a few of those blighters for me!

Have you tried planting or having potted misquote repellant plants? They may help.

Roberta the tip about lavender is awesome! I had no clue. It’s one of my favorite plants/flowers. I have an even bigger excuse to plant more types around the house.

There is also a mosquito repellant geranium that was very popular for a while… Not sure if it’s bunny safe though but it could still be planted near windows and doors..Just found this too, WOW… Basil repels flies and mosquitoes too, my garden is also full of that as is the house. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pest-repelling_plants
and finally I also use old fashioned sticky fly traps plus the pretty window ones that look like daisies and sun flowers. They attract the mozzies and they get stuck to them, no harmful chemicals and very easy to use.. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FLY-STICKER-WINDOW-TRAP-5-x-Sticky-Traps-Sun-Flower-Attractant-Flies-Insects-/151237023091?pt=AU_Pest_Control&hash=item23366dd573

They are terrible here in Wisconsin. I spoke with my vet about it, since I also live in Wisconsin, and she told me that she knew of no reports recently of there being an outbreak, so I think you’re okay.

I read somewhere that basil helps with mosquitoes! I have a basil plant in a pot outside! I don’t know if it would survive living in the bunny room though…

Hiskatey93: Thanks for telling me! That makes me feel better.
