Pond’s neuter went well and he is home now, looking stoned out of his mind. The vet used glue, not stitches. Every time Pond starts licking himself, I immediately stop him. My question is, do I need to be as vigilant? There are no stitches to pull out; as long as he doesn’t overdo it, can he groom the glue off?
You would think I’d never had an animal fix before, as anxious and paranoid as I’m being!

I had Mr Jingles neutered three months ago.  The vet did one row of stitches inside then glue then another row of stitches outside.  We he took out all the external stitches the second day after his neuter.  He also licked it non stop and there was nothing I could do to control it.  Just keep an eye on his boo boo and make sure it doesn’t look infected.  Mr Jingles licked it so much, he did get a small infection but he healed quickly anyway.  I just had to clean hi boo boo every day and he had an extra week of antibiotics so it didn’t get worse.  Pond will be fine just keep an eye for any changes.

He likely has stitches on the inside and glue on the outside. I don’t think he can lick the glue off. Since you are concerned, you could give the vet a call and ask their advice. I imagine they probably expect calls like this and won’t mind at all. Even though none of my buns ever bothered their incisions/glue, I checked them twice a day — even emailed the vet’s office pics of the incisions to make sure everything looked normal!

As long as he is not causing any bleeding or irritation. It’s normal to want to groom. I had a bun, however, that was grooming so much the area started to bleed and he had to wear a cone for a week. Talk to your vet about fitting him with a cone if is unwilling to leave the area alone.
