        Hi

I have an 8 year old house rabbit (dwarf lop) who is currently suffering with GI Stasis…I think. I’m concerned it could be bloat and am unsure really of the difference. This is the second episode (previous and first in Dec just past, accompanied by econiculi) and prior to that no health problems at all.

She’s now eating bits and pieces and is taking cisopride & panacur to try and ward off EC whilst immune system low. I’ve also got Emeprid to begin tonight, which has suited her well in the past.

My concern is that poop is still only a little and very infrequently – usually after recovery food which I’m also giving.

        Any advice…?

        🙁

Did the vet check her teeth?

If you think she has gas, it couldn’t hurt to try a bit of simethecone. It’s good that she’s eating a little, try to encourage that. (((((Vibes)))))

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbyC6CWbm5M watch this video, this helped me a lot when my Charlie boy was gassy and was in GI stasis, after 24 hours of massage, simethicone (baby gas drops) and force feeding pineapple flavored pedialyte and plenty of water, he recovered quickly. Get ready to have a messy time, because in my experience, he tried so hard to refuse the meds, water and pedialyte, but you’re alpha bunny, so keep syringe feeding them. But if she can still eat by herself a little that is great, so focus on great hydration. If she’s eating a little, I REALLY would not worry that it is bloat, bloat is really easy to detect. Touch your bunny’s tummy and if it feels ROCK hard, you have a problem. if it is bad gas and GI stasis, it should just feel a little taut and distended, but you can still squish into it with your fingers.

                Thanks everyone.

The vet did a general check of her and teeth seemed ok. She also seems more tempted by crunchier food so I can’t think it can be hurting to chew.

We had a little bout of poop last night so fingers crossed the gut is standing to move again.

I’ve noticed she doesn’t drink much which I don’t think helps and possibly contributed to stasis.

Any tips on encouraging drinking, aside from syringes?

The syringe is the easiest way I am afraid. They are fairly cheap like 2 dollars at most at most drug stores (Walmart). It is really important to make sure they get enough water because you can’t exactly force their face into their water bowl or water bottle thing, It is a little tricky at first but slide the syringe into the side of your bun bun’s mouth and SLOWLY squeeze in. Don’t go to fast or else the liquid can accidentally get into their lungs. If it tastes yummy, you usually can just go up to them and shove it in. But when it happened to Charlie, he was feeling so yucky that he wouldn’t let me do that even. I got pineapple flavored pedialyte because I knew he likes the taste of metacam, but I had to physically sit him up like a little baby and restrain him and administer his pedialyte and gas drops. he was so tired he didn’t really move around too much, but then again, I’m pretty experienced with squirmy bunnies. Charlie was so bad off that he would try and dribble it out of his mouth after I would syringe it in, but I kept trying and he finally surrendered. He got better in 24 hours because I hydrated him and massaged hm so well. After syringe hydration, massage for a few minutes and then attempt to offer favorite greens. Sometimes recovery can take a long time.

You can mix a small amount of apple juice into the water bowl to entice her to drink. Also make sure any veggies you give her are thoroughly wet.

                      Thanks everyone.

Molly is eating a bit more and is pooping too – although she’s not eating with anywhere near her normal enthusiasm and the poop is still smaller/harder than usual.

What’s concerning me most now is the feel of her stomach…feels large and almost like a water balloon.

I have the vets again tomorrow.

How did it go at the vets?

                          Well, I have mixed views.

They are a bit puzzled as to how she is up/down. Usually with stasis, once they perk up they continue to do so – but Molly is on/off food etc. They gave her another dose of antibiotics and a steroid jab, and I’ve got to continue with all the other medicines.

I’m starting to wonder how much all the stress/upset is making this worse…no wonder she’s not herself? The vet says her tummy is not overly bloated now.

She’s starting to refuse the meds and I’m getting concerned over the amount I’m meant to be putting in her.

                          🙁

Also…still some teeth grinding and I heard her tummy gurgling quite loudly when she was drinking.

It will have its ups and downs-hopefully, it will be just up soon. Have you asked about IV fluids to hydrate her a bit better?
How much are you forcefeeding per day?

Well, some good news. Molly perked up yesterday, she’s eating pretty normally, poos are almost back to normal size, and I even got some binkies. The only thing is that she’s still up/down a bit in herself…sometimes pleased to see me & hopping around, but other periods of sitting still in the corner. I’m not sure whether I should be expecting this a bit anyway as she gets older (Molly is my first rabbit) but it wasn’t the case prior to this starting a couple of weeks ago so I think it’s more likely related?

I’ve stopped force feeding now she’s eating but am still occasionally giving some water. Only if she doesn’t seem to have drunk much though, as the stress of it seems to make her worse.

Fingers crossed we don’t go backwards when the drugs wear off.

                                She’s a little fighter! X
