So my 1 year old Flemish Giant buck is shedding at the moment. I noticed that when I brush him, or  if the hair just falls away it is clumped together by a little nub that looks like a flake of dandruff. Similar to this picture: I will provide a link to the image below.

There are no signs of any mites, or fleas or any other parasite. It’s not like he is losing fur everywhere, it is mainly at his rear end, behind his back legs and across his rump where he can’t reach as well to groom. He isn’t itchy or self mutilating. There are no cuts or sores on him at all. But there is a patch across his rump that looks like dry skin, and makes the little plugs on the hair when it comes out. It doesn’t leave any skin behind in the fur, but looks similar to dandruff. Is this normal? It is a heavy shed.

Tufts usually do just come out during heavy molts. Usually skin doesn’t come with the fur, but if you don’t see any signs of mites or parasites, I would say he is fine unless this continues past his usual molting time.

Porky gets small flakes with tufts frequently, it is different from when he molts. I’ve had other rabbits, so I was familiar with molting already, and the tufts with flakes is different.

Molting is just lots, and lots, and lots of loose fur with out flakes that comes out creating a visible pattern. It takes places over several days, but then it is done and over.

The tufts and flakes are an ongoing thing. They are also mostly around his rump area, They are small and don’t create the mottled appearance of a molt.

I have taken Porky to the vet specifically over this, but the vet declared him healthy. None of my other bunnies had this. Porky has had it for years and it hasn’t harmed his health at all. It can be a sign of a health problem though, so just b/c it wasn’t for Porky I would still take any other rabbit in to the vet just to make sure it wasn’t health related.

I suspect with Porky it’s just dry skin. I had a cat prone to dry skin once, and I’d moisturize her skin with butter, but you can’t do that to a bunny since they are obligate herbivores instead of carnivores like cats.

Thank you for this. Is there anything I can use on my bun to ease his dry skin by chance?

I didn’t see any signs of mites, and it was only over his rump, nowhere else, which doesn’t sound like mites because aren’t they supposed to affect the entire body? But I called my vet, and she recommended I give him a small dose of oral Ivermectin to be safe, so I did do that.

She also said a good home remedy was to give him a bath in Listerine, and does it with her buns, so I did that as well. Shockingly enough he actually enjoyed the bath. O.o And the blow drying afterwards.

Thing is I’m not sure of his molting time. He is shedding lightly all over, but it is a little worse over his rump where I see the dry skin. A few days before it was worse more towards his head.

He isn’t itchy, there are no sores… And the dry skin is only over a part of his rump, and he has no bald patches, so I’m not thinking it is mites. But to be safe I called my vet to ask for her opinion, and she isn’t sure if it is mites because he isn’t showing any signs of discomfort, and where it is located. She told me to dose him orally with Ivermectin, ((You can get it locally in the stores here, and she told me the proper dosage size to give him)) and give him a Listerine bath which he very much enjoyed. The second I opened the bathroom door he bolted into the tub, and waited there for me.

I guess I will have to wait and see. If it is still going on by July I’ll probably take him in to see her.

Well I took him to the vet, after I discovered his shedding was becoming worse, and ran across a bald patch on his bum.

He sadly does have mites, and has been treated with an injection from my vet. He follows up for a second injection on July 1st. And right now I have  a not happy bunny, and a super duper beyond clean apartment. The vet gave me a few cleaning supply items that I can use on my carpet, on my bed, his cage, on my sheets and whatnot, that will kill any bit of mites, and not harm either me or the bun.

He is really grumpy cause I had to give him a good wipe down, and stick him in the bathroom while I cleaned.
