Hannah’s left eye has been wet for quite a long time. With our vet we tried bathing it, leaving it alone and putting eye drops in it. Now the vet wants to flush her tear ducts. I went through a lot with Buddy last year and now this. I am so worried. Have any of your bunnies had it done? Is it dangerous? Should I expect any medication being prescribed? The vet said she’ll do it under local anaesthetic and it will take 15 minutes. Pretty straightforward according to her but I still worry. Am I panicking for no reason?

Yes, many times with a few rabbits. I guess medication would depend on what the vet decides once she flushes – maybe some eye drops, but it’s hard to know what your vet’s protocol is.

It sounds like your vet has experience with this so I wouldn’t worry.

I have had this done on many guinea pigs and several rabbits. It is not very invasive, and your vet sounds experienced, so I wouldn’t worry about it. You will likely receive some eye drops.

When we took our buns in for a check up we had them look at Keter’s eye which was so wet in the front it looked bad. They flushed it in less then five minutes and her eye cleared up no problem. I wouldn’t worry. Apparently its not uncommon, and she might have just got somethin in there. Keter had hay bits. Our vet didn’t put her under when she did it.

If Hannah has something in her eye causing her irritation I bet she’ll be pleading to have it done (just a shame our bunnies don’t understand when we are trying to help them out). I had something in my eye for days and it almost sent me insane and just as I was about to grab the phone to make a doctor’s appointment I grabbed a piece of paper towel and with the folded peak took one last try not caring if I took my own eye out and got it! The relief was instant! Not sure if this is the cause for Hannah’s weeping eye, but if it is…. once it’s all better she’ll love you for it even though she won’t understand at the time. Wishing Hannah all the best with her procedure and you for being her worried mum. Cheers MissD.

Bindi’s had his flushed a few times. I usually get them done when he goes in for his dental so he’s already under. Some bunnies are just predisposed to blocked tear ducts, especially lops. It’s really not a big deal at all. As soon as Bindi’s are flushed, they stay nice and dry for a while. Depending on the reason for the blockage, they may need to be done routinely.

Thank you all, you made me feel so much better I just hope that’s what it is and not some dental problem.

If the vet is not planning to, I would suggest he/she have a look at her teeth while she’s sedated.

She wasn’t sedated, the vet just put some numbing drops in her eye before he started. Unfortunately the flush didn’t work, the water just wouldn’t go through. He tried a few times. Her tear duct is definitely blocked but the flush won’t unblock it. Have you ever heard about anything like that? He thinks that that’s the way her duct is and it’s possible that nothing can be done about it. He suggested an x-ray to have a look at her teeth roots but if they’re fine, Hannah’s eye will just be wet all her life and we’ll have to concentrate on making sure the skin around her eye doesn’t get irritated. I’ve got to say I am really disappointed

Unfortunately I experienced this with my first rabbit – those ducts are very tiny too – it would be a good idea to get an x-ray however – if there is a problem though with the tooth roots, I’m not entirely sure there is a solution for that either.

I am sorry it didn’t turn out as well as you hoped.
I had to clean one of my late bunnies eyes often, it wasn’t too bad.

Thanks Sarita and LEL. Will do the xray next month just to make sure her teeth are alright but I suppose I’ll just have to look after her eye and make sure it’s clean. She was binkying like nuts yesterday so she’s happy and that’s what matters

Sorry they were not able to flush her eye. I know Bindi’s eyes get really clogged up and it takes the vet several tries to flush all the thick goo out. When his eyes are really goopy/wet, once or twice a day I take a cotton ball or pad damp with hottish (not too hot!!!!!) and hold it over his tear duct area for several minutes. This can sometimes help loosen up the goop in there. Then I clean the area well and pat dry with a kleenex. He’s never had any skin irritation, probably due to my diligent cleaning.

I think the Xray is a good idea. Hopefully, all is well but better safe than sorry.
