Some of you may or may not remember my posts about Mocha having a runny/goopy eye. At that time I thought I would wait it out and see if it got worse before rushing to the vet as I don’t have any exotic vets where I live. In the past month Mocha has developed this foggy part in the center of his eye that after I did some research, I am assuming is a corneal ulceration. Its just a guess but in December his x-rays showed over grown teeth which can cause a corneal ulceration. Here is his eye:

I re sized the image to the smallest possible like I normally do but for some reason its extremely large…. Anyways. You can see the foggy tear drop looking thing in the middle of his eye. In real life it sometimes looks cloudy but mostly it just looks like a thin layer of his eye has been scrapped away. I finally called vets this morning and found out the closest exotic vet is my old vet 2 hours away!!  I love that vet but that is a long drive… I made an appointment for 12:20 on Tuesday (which after booking the appointment my friend reminded me i booked it for my birthday….). Because it will be a 4 hour round trip would it be a good idea to bring the other 2 bunnies with? They have always went to the vet together in the past but maybe its not worth stressing 3 rabbits out? Let me know what you guys think… Sorry I am all over the place but I am absolutely freaked out at the thought of my baby possibly being put under to have his teeth filed…… Anyone else have this happen to your rabbit?

This has never happened to my rabbits. I believe one of mine has cateracts though. Sorry I can’t help you with that.
I love your youtube channel (upload more vidoes! ) And I think you should bring Mocha and Lulu and leave Ebony.
Someone please help her with more expierence!

It is (like you said) likely to be caused by the overgrown teeth. I think you made the right decision to take them to your old vet that you trust. I would take all three bunnies.
Don’t worry before you even get to the vet. Many, many rabbits go under for teeth trims, and don’t have problems.

Thanks for the info! One thing I’m worried about is if he happens to get his teeth trimmed then it may be better not to have the other 2 bunnies in the kennel with him as he might be groggy after waking up? Also if I leave him there while they do the procedure it would probably leave the whole kennel and I wouldn’t want the vet having to deal with 3 bunnies.

That does make sense. Do they do the teeth trimming on the same day?
If so, I would just take Mocha and just make sure you watch them for a bit when you put them back together, just to make sure everything’s ok.

Well I’m not sure. I called and said I’m pretty sure he needs his teeth trimmed and they told me because of the far drive they may be able to do it the same day. It just depends if the vet has time and thinks he’s healthy enough. I’m sure he’s healthy enough though as he’s acting like his normal self besides his eye looking funny.

When it’s time for me to take Bumpy to the vet, it’ll be just over 2 hr drive for us too. Because we live so far, our vet has me come first thing in the morning to drop off and they check him over quickly with me at time of drop off. That way they have several hours for any procedure and plenty of time for them to be awake.

Meanwhile we drive around the city, meet up with family or friends, or at the least, sit in the parking lot with a good book and some decent tunes.

I hope everything goes ok! (love your channel too!)

So has your bunny had this teeth trimmed before? Do you know how long it takes?

No, I’m unfamiliar with that being done, however I will say the anesthesia used is a gas (isoflurane is the most common safe one) and from working at a vet hospital I can tell you how fast it wears off. As soon as the gas is turned off, they are still hooked up to straight oxygen and within 30 seconds the animal will be trying to stand and within 10-15 min is fully awake.

Judging by some pics of some REALLY HORRIBLE spurs, and knowing dental tool capabilities, I would guess even that wouldn’t take more than an hour or so. So theoretically, with good timing, I bet you could drop off at 7:30-8am and pick up by noon. May be something to consider, I know how that distance can make it much harder with the stress.

Thanks! The earliest time they gave me was 12:20pm so i might not get home until late. We may go shopping or something if he happens to have his teeth done although I will probably be freaking out.

I think I may take Lulu with him. He has this thing where he is afraid to be alone and kinda freaks out when I would separate him from Lulu when doing agility. I think he would feel better being with her.

Rupert had his teeth done this fall-I was totally freaked out. It was no big deal AT ALL Phew! You can’t help worrying but it’s really nothing at all.

It doesn’t take too long I think-20-30 minutes, depending on how severe it is.

Don’t worry, it very common for rabbits to have this done, and its not really a huge deal.

Thanks guys!!! I’m so nervous about it but I’m kinda hoping it’s his teeth because I’m afraid that it could be something worse like E.C

Hi mocha200, I am sure everything will be fine! It’s less likely to be EC but if it is, we have just been through EC of the eye with our little man and he came through it beautifully. We can offer support if you need it or have any questions. x

Sorry I didn’t post earlier! Everything went well!! Turns out his eye was just a scar from a previous ulceration that might have happened when his eye was tearing a lot. The vet said that it has healed nicely though. When they looked at his teeth she said she couldn’t see any spurs but would only beable to tell for sure if she sedated him. She said since he’s acting fine that I could just bring him back if he gets worse. Since it was a 4 hour drive I decided to go ahead and have her sedate him that day as I didn’t want to have to run back down the next week and do it. Turns out he had slight spurs on his top molars and his bottom molars were getting long too, so she filled them a down. I’m so released to know his teeth are good now!!

Glad to hear it is nothing serious and that his teeth filing went well!
