After lots of blood tests the vet decided that Lola was ok to have her surgery. She was spayed yesterday. Since I brought her home she hasn’t eaten except for one small bite of banana before I went to bed last night. How long can she not eat before I should worry? I called and left a message with the vet this morning but she hasn’t called back yet. Any suggestions on how to get her to eat? I tried more banana (her most favorite treat) this morning but she won’t eat it now.

Sometimes it can take up to a full day from the surgery for females to start eating a bit.

It can take longer for them to get back to normal.

Try to entice her with fresh greens – that is the best.

Did you get pain meds from the vet for her?

Hydration is always my first call… Get some lovely moist basil, parsley, nasturtium and coriander in front of her… Syringe small amounts of water into the side of her mouth till she starts to lap… Don’t pick her up, get down to her level and gently put it to her mouth… Lots of peace and quiet and don’t drive her crazy checking on her for the first day and a half.

She has been drinking out of her bowl pretty good since this morning. I tried both the parsley and the coriander she smelled them but turned away without eating them. She does have pain meds every 12 hours. I haven’t been picking her up I am too scared I am going to hurt her. She hopped around the living room a little this morning (slowly) then went and cuddled her blanket again. I think she is doing ok I just wasn’t sure how long was too long without eating.

Trying breaking the parsley and the coriander to release the fragrance and see if that will entice her.

Sometimes they do need a bit of a push to start eating. Offer all her favorite foods. Try tickling her nose with a bit of parsley, sometimes it irritates them just enough that they bite it.

Thanks for all the advice! We kept trying to get her to eat for most of that day. She finally ate around dinner time. Not much but enough that I wasn’t too worried any more. And the next morning she ate like she hadn’t eaten in a year. It’s been a full week and she is almost back to normal activity now. I still haven’t put her ramps back in to the other levels of her cage (she WILL NOT jump up to other levels so she has been taking it easy..no worries) but thinking about doing it tonight.

Glad to hear she’s bounced back so well!

Glad she’s doing well. She should be fine with the ramps after a week.

We put her ramps in last night and she ran up and down like a manic bunny. I think she missed the rest of her condo!!!!! SO happy she is doing so well. The vet kind of scared us a little after her last blood panel. Her enzymes were still high but all her other blood tests came back normal/negative so she wanted to go ahead with the surgery (thinking that maybe her normal was just a little higher combined with the stress of being at the vet) but kept cautioning us that if that there was something wrong with her liver she might not recover. BIG SIGH OF RELIEF at our house! Thanks again everyone. I am sure my Lola wouldn’t be as happy a bunny if I hadn’t found this site and all the wonderful support and advice.
