She gets all the Tim hay she wants. 4 leaves a day of Rom Lettuce, w/parsley at night. AND Home dehydrated banana, pineapples or peaches.

Cut the dried fruit down to 4 a day, either 3 bananas, and 1 pineapple, 1 and 3=4

Just looked at the 6 pound can of peaches I use for dehydrating peaches, (wife has it for daughters graduation reception, I been steeling peaches.) Any way a serving is like 12 slices of Peaches in a thick sauce/juice. There is 15 grams of sugar or, over 1/2 ounce, in a serving of 12 peaches. I haven’t looked at canned pineapples but, wanna bet they are full of sugar added too?

I slice the bananas so those are real, but, now, I guess cutting peaches and pineapples are next.

Lesson to all, don’t feed canned fruit!

I think fresh fruit would probably be best too :~)

It doesn’t surprise me that they sneak in extra sugar in those canned fruits. Probably makes for a very tasty rabbit treat though.

I’m hoping most of the sugar is dried out when the wet sauce gets dehydrated, but, it gets re-hydrated in saliva……………so. Me thinks, NOT!

You can get canned fruit without added sugar. They’re labeled as being “in water” instead of “in syrup”. But I think fresh is best as well.

The good dietary enzymes of pineapples are in fresh pineapples, not canned. If you insist on canned then you’re spending more money for an inferior product. Canned food are more expensive.

Standard, the enzymes in pineapple that were once thought to help GI problems were studied and it’s been found that the enzymes are destroyed by the high acidity of the rabbit stomach before they can do any good. So in that regard, it shouldn’t matter.

However, in sugar content, it definitely doesn’t surprise me! I swear canned fruits always taste sweeter !

“Without sugar”, “in water”, “dietary enzymes”. You guys take all the fun out of fruit!

Wait Tanlover. What? I’m wasting my $ on papaya?

According to the most recent studies done on pineapple/papaya in regards to the acidity they can withstand before being destroyed – they didn’t even make it CLOSE to the acidity levels of a rabbit tum tum, so yes. LOL =P

I’m betting, just the fact they start to eat “anything” after day’s without water or food, (hopefully, not many), Just like a horse, if they stop eating, it’s just like a rabbit, gotta make sure they eat SOMETHING, everyday.

So, enzymes………………………………………… I don’t know, but Velvet seemed to like the papaya, the one time, years ago she stopped eating and drinking everything else. But, she finally started to eat papaya chunks and gradually started to get an appetite. SO, I believe if you can find anything that your bunny will start to nibble on, when in GI trouble, it may just save it’s life, keep those tummies churning, churning, churning.

The papaya tablets are great for a treat, but I agree that the actual enzyme benefit is negligible.

I would also keep with fresh fruit you can.

I honestly just use the fruit I buy for myself to give them a little treat since it goes bad so quickly.

One of mine can no longer have sugar so we use Barley Biscuits when he’s around the others. However, if I’m hanging out with one by themselves I’ll give them a munch of the banana or apple I plan on eating later. It actually works out well because I have been tempted to give it to them everyday when I buy it just for them. But now, I only give it to them when I’m planning on eating it. I have found the Barley Biscuits they go bonkers for without the added sugars and such that fruits can contain as well. So they get their Barley Biscuits and then a bite of something really tasty every now and again
