I got some Timothy Hay in prep for my new bunny, I got it KNOWING that I am allergic to grass. I realise now, that Timothy hay is a grass hay and, I am allergic to it. My allergies are going haywire! I need something else to feed my bunny!

After learning i’m allergic to Timothy hay, I learned about Alfalfa Hay. Is it okay to feed to baby bunnies? What about Adults? thanks!

How old are your bunnies? It’s okay to feed growing bunnies, but it will fatten adult rabbits and they will become really unhealthy.
You can feed alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets until your rabbit is about 7 months -1 year old. Make it 7 months if your bunny is becoming chubby or producing too many cecotropes.
Feed adult buns timothy pellets, and either timothy, oat, or orchard grass hay. Along with fresh water and vegetables.

          Hope I helped!!!

Bunnies over 6-7 months will need grass hay, so if you are allergic to all grass hay, and your allergies bother you a lot, then maybe its not good to get a bunny. Try different types of hay. Some people say oat hay is not as bad on the allergies. Alfalfa isn’t suitable for older bunnies as its too rich and can make them fat.

80% of a bunny’s diet is grass hay. Alfalfa is a legume not grass and it’s not recommended for adult rabbits. Oat and Orchard hay are sometimes easier for people that have allergies to handle. I would see if you can stand being around either of those. If not, then a bunny might not be the best pet for you. Hay is such a huge part of their diet and it can’t really be replaced.

Good luck! I hope you can find a grass hay that works for you.

Yes, quite a few BB members have found that Orchard grass is less irritating to their allergies than Timothy.

                  Try buying dust free hay.
