We have two bonded bunnies, Beveren our male is about 6 years old and Betsy our female is about 1-2 years. Bev is very mellow and only comes out of their pen to find somewhere else to lounge. Betsy is a spaz. She is like a hyper puppy, exploring, running laps, binky’ing…

Now my questions is, do rabbits “play”. If I had another hyper bunny like Betsy, would they play together and help her not get bored? I am considering adding a third bunny to the mix but mostly so she has some entertainment. Obviously I would love a third bunny too but if they don’t really play like I am imagining, I would decide against it.

I am picturing bunnies playing like kittens and puppies. Exploring together, running around chasing each other. Is that accurate?

They could, depends on the bunny.

I really think it depends on the bunnies. My Tans are very active rabbits, very hyper, and they’ll run around the room at top speeds jumping and running into the other bunnies until they join in the fun. My Lionheads on the other hand are all very docile and calm. They will do a few jumps and binkies with the Tans and then resume their sleeping loaf position

Our bonded pair play together sometimes. They chase each other and climb on each other. Usually it’s more copying each other — one will binky and then the other, one will throw a toy and then the other will run over and throw a toy. Luckily their bunny 500’s tend to occur at different times. The times they’ve gotten going at the same time have been scary — I’ve seen Moshi plow straight into Marlee, and have seen a couple of mid-air collisions during bunny 500 binkies.

I say they play together sometimes. Most of the time they are eating hay together (no matter how many hay feeder/litter boxes we have, they seem to both be in one together), or lounging together. Moshi is more the wild one, but Marlee will nip him in the if he gets out of control!

My bunnies do. They chase each other(playfully) and sometimes they even toss the barbell chew back and forth. But it really does depend.

My get into trouble together, so if you call that playing then, well, you know. Typically Leopold will decide that something is a good idea and Wooly will follow.

So looking for another playful bunny to adopt isn’t a bad idea? Do you think it will be good for Betsy? I know nothing’s guaranteed but in general, having another playful bunny would help with her boredom?

It might help her to have a lively buddy but will also give her someone to teach her good *and* bad fun bunny things to do (see LBJ10’s post). If you are going to try for a bonded trio, both your current bunnies need to be involved in the selection if at all possible.

It is fun to watch them interact, but make sure you prepare yourself for bonding.

^ Definitely prepare yourself for bonding! I agree with JackRabbit, definitely take BOTH dating at all possible.

Yeah bonding will be a pain. We bonded these two and it was a pain!
