        Hey guys

I need a way of storing hay so that the buns have access to it but cant get it EVERYWHERE. My ma has asthma so the hay dust would need to be kept to a minimum – it’s stored in a big bin at the moment and is then decanted to their cages. Does anyone have any ideas about something I could create for the buns to allow them access to their hay but not for it to go everywhere?

        Thanks!

        Anna, Barney and Belle xx

So you’re looking for like a hay rack?
What do you use at the moment?

How about a bin or sorts with a hole cut in the bottom so you can refill at the top and buns can get hay at the bottom?

I have hay racks at the moment, but they seem to manage to pull it all out and then tread it all over the carpet Haha. Yeah that might be a good idea … though they like digging so would likely dig it out all over the carpet!!
I’m not sure if there even IS a method of storing it sensibly! x

Hmmm, yeah I see what you mean, that’s tricky!
I’m sure someone will have an idea

You could make a wooden box holder with holes in the top and sides, so they can’t dig it out. But, they could still pull it out with their mouth.

If you have time, you could put smaller amounts of hay in it and hang it over the litter boxes. That way, at least the mess stays (mostly) contained to the litter box when they pull it out and smaller amounts means less hay gets thrown around and more gets eaten at a time.

And an air purifier and lots of vacuuming helps.

You could try a hay bad, basically a fabric bag with holes in the front and top. I think if you could get a small bin and cut a few holes in the front that would work great.
Let us know what works, I am sure others could use this too.

Have you, also, tried other types of hay? Maybe ones that not as dusty? Oat hay is really great and yummy and it’s not as dusty. That may help with her asthma.

I came here to say exactly what BunnyBrigade said: try different types of hay as well. I use oat now, and it has done wonders for preventing my allergies from making me miserable.

Otherwise, I can only think that maybe the hay could be kept in a way that will let you pick up the mess easier. I use an old cage bottom that my girl hops into, her hay rack hangs on the side of an ex-pen. Even if your two are free roaming 100% of the time, a designated hay spot might make it easier to clean up and contain.

Yup! And thank you! It was like $5 at Target and I just cut a hole, sanded it down, and stuffed it with hay! It holds at least a weeks worth! Oh, and I put a hook on the back so I can easily remove it to go fill it in the garage where I keep a bale. After having rabbits for 7+ years I finally figured out a solution for hay that works for me!

KytKattin: What did you use to cut the hole?

I would, also, try different brands of hay. I noticed that different brands seem to trigger my allergies while others don’t. (It may be just me that notices this.)

                              KytKattin that’s really neat!

I second, er, third the oat hay! Virtually dust free, their cages are much cleaner under their feeders since i switched them to Oxbow Oat hay.

MissGabbster: I used a box cutter knife/blade thing. I went VERY VERY VERY slowly as to prevent it from cracking and so I wouldn’t slip. Then I sanded down the edges so she wouldn’t hurt her big eyes while grabbing hay!
