Hi I’m new to this bunny thing. We just got Lilly from a friend about a month ago cause they couldn’t take care of her anymore.
Well when we go to pet her she starts this loud whining noise. Then she gets really loud when you pick her up. Is this normal? Cause our other rabbit Nutmeg didn’t do this when we got her.
Oh and Lilly just turned 1 in April.

          Whining?
          I’d say that’s not normal…. bunnies don’t really whine.
          Maybe it’s a nasal problem?
All a bit strange! Let’s see what other people think.

I agree with Tessie, rabbits don’t whine like a dog might. The only noises they make are grunting and honking. They can also scream but that only happens if they are scared to death or in extreme pain. Maybe she just starts to breath more rapidly when you pet her or pick her up and you hear a wheezing sound created by a nasal issue like Tessie suggested. In that case a vet visit might be in order in case she has a respiratory infection or something similar. Is there any discharge around her nose? Has she been seen by a vet since you got her?

No discharge around the nose. And no she hasn’t. We don’t have vets close enough. They’re like 45 mins to a hour away. And right now we don’t have the money for vets.

When Stickers was stressed out bonding with Powder, she would lay flat to the ground and she did whine and it did sound a lot like a dog. It was one of the most pitiful noises ever. Is it possible Lily is stressed (the picking up making it louder sounds like it may be)?

It’s hard to explain the noise.

I guess she could be stressed from moving to a different home. Plus we have another female. Both are not fixed.

Makes me think she is going through a false pregnancy and they get this kind of whimpering sound.

Ya mine does that but it is rare and kinda soft, it is like a low squeak breathing noise when picked up (she hates being picked up) that even a human can do under the right conditions (nose a bit stuffy)

She also has another weird sound when being picked up and it actually happened at the shelter when they where trying to pick her up while cutting her nails. I was like did you hear that? I never herd that sound before, (now sometimes she does it when I pick her up)

Also here is a different form of “whining”

                       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWkmEhNYVF0

Really I think that is more commonly labeled as a growl though

For the noise your hearing, it just might be from breathing heaver from being picked up?
