We just picked up this sweetheart. His name is Thumper, he is a 10 year old UN-neutered male dwarf. His previous owner said he’s never been to the vet either. He is very mellow as he is quite old  He’s been at my house for about an hour and as barely moved.. I don’t know if this is because of his age or if he’s scared.

My other bunny, Ted, is also a dwarf but he’s 3 1/2 years old and also un-neutered.

I am a little nervous about Thumper’s eye area as its a little wet? I don’t know what it is. You can see it a bit in the second photo. Has anyone had any experience with this? I am a little worried (if its something bad) about the possibility of my other rabbit, Ted, getting it too? It could be nothing but I’m just really nervous!!

        Any input would be appreciated!

I feel so bad for this little guy he’s sooo cute but he’s very old. I am glad I rescued him because if I didn’t he would’ve spent the night in a dark shed all alone. And who knows if he would’ve been in there tomorrow too  Not sure about how we are going to keep the two.. Ted is a very hyper and spunky (but total sweetheart) 3 year old and Thumper is very very old and mellow, and he barely moves. I don’t know if its a good idea to introduce the two? Both are not neutered but I feel like they might enjoy each other’s company. I do not see Ted being aggressive towards the older guy but I am just not sure how they would react to each other ! Please help!

It could be many things, such as a minor URI or dust in the eye. But at his age, I think you should take him to the vet anyway to make sure everything’s alright with him, and you can talk to the vet about it then.

I posted in your other topic but I would not worry about this being anything contagious. My thoughts are that it is either an eye irritant since he was outside or possible dental problem at his age.

Would be wise to have the vet do a thorough check since the poor rabbit has never been to a vet.

Could be that he is scared – I imagine it’s quite a sensory overload or perhaps a mobility problem like arthritis at his age.

            He’s very very sweet.

Thank you guys. We are planning to take him to the vet within the next few days. He seems to be adjusting well.

                Hi there,

I just wanted to comment that Thumper is extremely adorable and in the photos, looks well for his age. I have an older rabbit and before his mobility problems, he moved but not so much. As you know older rabbits are much more mellow and just move when they have to!

As for the eye, I agree with the others. It would be wise to take him for an examination at the vet (which you plan to do). At this point, you will know for sure what the problem is. Your elderbun may have some eye irritants or dental problems that come with age.

Congratulations on the new bunny and thank you for considering an older gentleman as your addition.

What a cutie pie! So glad you took him in.

Clear discharge can be caused by dental issues or a blocked tear duct. At his age, he’s definitely overdue for a thorough exam.
