There is a cottontail by our house that looks like it has a dislocated hind leg. I have already decided that it would be cruel to try and catch it, all that would do is scare it and possibly injure it further, so I won’t try that, but is there any chance of the leg healing? It was getting around great on three legs I have to say.

Try contacting a local wildlife rescue… They have the resources to catch treat and release wild bunnies and giving them back quality of life.

Yeah, a local wildlife place would be able to catch it, heal it and release it if available. Otherwise, it will likely get along OK, but the leg will heal incorrectly and 3 legs does make it more vulnerable to predators.

If it’s really dislocated, it will have to be put back in place. Otherwise, the leg will be useless and the bunny will essentially be a tripod bun. It’s important to catch it as quickly as possible. If the leg stays out of place for too long, they won’t be able to pop it back in because the tendons will stretch and will become too loose to hold everything together. I agree, a wildlife rescue would be your best bet.

I would see if you can get a live trap. There is no way you are going to catch a bun with a net or something. Although if the bun is limping, you might be able to.
Good luck to you and the bun.

Ok, they called back and said that I should not try and catch it now, because it is still strong, and I might scare it to death. She said to wait and see if I can catch it when it is weaker. I’ll keep an eye out, I don’t know if I’ll see it again, but if I do they said to just put it in a box with a soft cloth and she could take it.
