Hi! So I posted a question asking if my rabbit was at a healthy weight and some people were saying that my rabbit that I thought was a cottontail sounds way to big to be one. I looked up pictures of cottontail and I noticed some traits that were different from my rabbit and wild rabbits. Here is where you guys come in, can you try to guess what breed she is? I rescued her from a breeding situation where the man was beating her, choking her, and not giving her food. She looks like a chinchilla but her color is much browner then grey chinchilla coloring. What do you think she is?

Definitely not a cottontail, she looks like a mix, maybe some Rex? the fur pattern on her head looks rex-y. Good for you for taking responsibility and rescuing her from such a horrible situation!

She’s so pretty! What a jerk – so glad she is with you now.

I used to help a rabbit rescue that also did wildlife rehabbing and had cottontails and jack rabbits and I had a friend who also had a cottontail that was injured in a lawn mower accident that she kept because she could not be released due to her injury and they are definitely different than our domestic rabbits.

Her coloring does appear to be the wild agouti coloring – I really cannot tell her breed but from the sounds of her situation it’s very likely she is a mix because a breeder like this is most likely doing backyard breeding.

Our Kieko has agouti coloring and is small. I actually sent pictures to our wildlife dept asking if she was a wild cottontail. Their Director said definitely not, that wild rabbits have longer thinner faces and domestic breeds have chubbier cheeks.

I agree with the others — definitely not a wild breed. With the body shape and size it almost looks like some tex and maybe polish???

If any one asks you what breed, just tell them “bunny rabbit”!! We’ve decided that’s really what breed Kieko is!

I just love agouti coloring too!

The breeder was a backyard breeder, I do not think that he knew anything about rabbits. I wonder if she could be a cottontail x rex or a cottontail x chinchilla.

Well cottontails cannot mix with domestic rabbits.

Looks domestic, we had cottontails in our yard quite often when I lived with my mom and we even had to rescue a few from the dogs and take them to a wildlife center – they are thinner, not so chubby and the shape is different.

Yep, cottontails cannot successfully breed with domestic rabbits. The chromosomes don’t match up.

I agree, her facial features do look a bit Rex-ish. Her fur isn’t the Rex type though.

As Sarita and LBJ said cottontails can’t breed with domestic rabbits. Domestic rabbits descend from European rabbits not cottontails.

There may be no way to tell what she is. Backyard breeders often don’t have great stock to begin with so even if they have a purebred rabbit to start they are usually not show quality/lack all the breed specific physical traits. She could be a mix of a mix of a mix, ect… She is really adorable though!

I agree that her head is rex-ish but she doesn’ t have the rex fur. I’m going to go with “Rex Mix” as my guess.

That is not a cottontail… Definitely an agouti domestic of some type.

I am bad with breeds but I just want to say she is beautiful! Thank you for rescuing her!

She looks pretty big, but her ears are rather small. Most of the larger breeds have larger ears, so that makes her not really fit any of the breeds I can think of really well. I’m going to go with loveable mutt.

She definitely resembles a rex rabbit. Her body is compact and reminds me of my mini rex. What is her weight? Minis top off at about 4 pounds, standards at about 8 pounds. She could also be a rex mix.

She looks like she’s mixed with a few things, but she definitely is precious and in good hands with you now! I hope that bad man that you rescued her from is being charged for animal cruelty!
