Sooo… I’ll just cut to the chase. My bun seems to pee off of the side of the litter box? He sits in it and is eating his hay but he never fully pulls his backside in. When I wake up theres always a mess outside of the box (like, half of it gets inside and half out). I’m thinking of going to get another litter box, a bigger one… hopefully that’ll help. So that he HAS to go fully in to get any of the hay. I’m using a medium sized cat pan, which is what was recommended to me.

He’s also in the dark at night… could that be why? I don’t think so… as I know they have very good memory mapping abilities and great smell etc.

        Any tips?

Oh, and it’s happened with both a medium sized cat pan and his ‘jumbo’ corner litter box.

I was using a standard cat box and could see that Bumpy was getting very close to going over the edge sometimes. I got a larger under-the-bed tote and it has higher sides too. HE LOVES IT. No more near misses, and it’s like he’s so happy getting in to eat his hay. Less mess with the hay too. So yea, a slightly bigger box with higher sides might do the trick!

Okie, I’ll find something bigger when I’m out. It’s really troublesome. >_< Oh, I have a quick question. How much litter do you find yourself going through? I just finished my first 20 pound bag and it's been only two weeks. Is that normal or am I doing something wrong?

That sounds like a lot. You don’t need the litter too deep. I start with it fairly shallow, then as they use it, I sprinkle a bit over the top so I can get through another day without cleaning…not that you’ll want to do it for, like, a week, but nice to keep the top fresh for them to step in. They don’t dig, so I don’t think there’s a benefit to deep bedding

I agree and do the same thing as Megabunny. Start off with a little, and now with this big box, I generally put a teeny bit on one end gradually getting a little bit thicker toward the other end. Then on the thinner side of litter is the side I place his hay on. To at least TRY to encourage him to go on the correct side.

But it always ends up hay everywhere in it anyway.
