So here is my story. I personally rescued my rabbit Cloud who is a cottontail rabbit who is not spayed and is a female. I recently started using litter boxes as soon as I heard about them on Youtube. My rabbit blissfully learned how to use them and it was great. Now, here is where the digging comes in. Last week I noticed that there were little bits of her litter outside of her litter box all throughout the week. I put the litter back in there and then never thought about it. On Saturday I found 2 hand fulls of litter outside her litter box. I was annoyed but then put it back in so she knows not to do it. But last night….. That was horrible. Cloud stays in my room when the weather is not well for a rabbit, but she normally lives outside. Last night was very humid so she was in my room. I woke up at 2 am to the sound of digging but went back to bed, she did the same thing around 3 am but I just ignored it. But at 4 am, that is when I got up. I turned the bedroom lights on and litter was EVERYWHERE! I could fill another litter box with the litter she dug out of her litter box! I took the litter box out of he cage but left the litter for me to clean in the morning. So my question is, why is she doing this? Is it hormonal? Should I put litter screens in until she is spayed (which will be on Wednesday)?

Digging is natural for rabbits – the screen will definitely deter digging in the litter box – spaying is not going to stop the digging though – some rabbits just need to keep busy and this is what they do.

I know that its natural to them, but I am wondering why now. I am guessing its hormonal. I got the litter box in January.

Oh if we could only read their minds. Sounds like she’s having a blast. How kind of you! Ha ha

Haha!! I feel your pain. lulu did this every night for about 2 and a half years even after she was spayed. It can be many things and it can stop but it may not. I would get her spayed if she isn’t. Also try changing litter. There is a screen that you can get too, I think at the BB store. Good luck

Mine seems to do that only when it is dirty and I read some rabbits do that for this reason. But there could be others like what has been said on here rabbits lie to dig.

Maybe get some towels you do not use anymore and just pile them randomly around the litterbox? that helped mine out when she was digging nutso the first night. Since she had the towel to dig it it made her happy and no noise.

Pookie does this because her nesting instinct is going strong for spring. I give her a blankie for some choice scooting and rearranging and she likes that more than digging litter.
