My baby rabbits are a month and two days old today. A few weeks ago one of them had feces stuck to his fur and it was irritating his genitalia. I rinsed him off and waited the next day to check on him and he was fine. I check the baby’s genitalia daily and a different bun had a scab on her genitals and it was red and swollen. It was so late at night that I decided to wait until this morning to check her out again. It was still pretty bad so I did what I did with the other and cleaned her off and everything. I am now at school worrying about her like crazy. I searched through the webs and saw a page full of diseases. I found one that stood out to me called Vent Disease. I am worried that she might have this, but I would like opinions.I am low on money and have no idea how much a vet visit would cost in approximate and what others think it may be. Someone already has their eyes on her and want to buy her, but I don’t want to make them upset if this problem is life threatening. I only got into bunnies in January after my boyfriend and I had gotten our own bunnies. Can anyone help me? I would like to know your thoughts and cost approximates. I am new to this whole bunny thing. I have had every other animal (literally) besides rabbits so I am freaking out. Thank you.

Well first off you should consult a vet about this – vet costs are part of owning rabbits. If it is vent disease then it must be treated by a vet – the best thing to do is call the vet and get some costs for office visits, etc…so that you know the costs as they can vary depending on location.

If you are breeding your rabbits, please reconsider (as it sounds like you don’t have the finances) and please read this article on why you should not breed:

I hope you can get your baby bunny the help he needs by calling the vet.

If it is vent disease, then they likely got it from their mother. Rabbits can be asymptomatic carriers, so they could all have it. Like Sarita said, you need to see a vet for this. It requires special antibiotic injections to treat it properly. Don’t try to treat it yourself, especially since you are not familiar with rabbits. At best, you would be wasting your money. At worst, you could kill your rabbit if you unknowingly gave them something that is unsafe for rabbits.

Price is going to vary depending on where you live. My vet will charge a $40 office visit for new “complaints”. But she will also see both of my rabbits at the same time and only charge me the $40. Follow-ups are at a reduced price. That is just for the vet visit. That doesn’t include tests or medications. I have heard people quote much more for a vet visit ($80 or more). So, like I said, it will vary.

Thanks, but just saying, I wasn’t expecting the babies. I’m not trying to breed rabbits. I didn’t even realize she was pregnant until I woke up one morning and she was giving birth.

I understand it is to be treated by a vet, for I know what vent disease is. I’m just not sure whether she hurt herself or what. She is fine now after cleaning her off. The redness and swelling is now gone and the scab is also disappearing. I’m not looking to make money off of breeding rabbits. Bean doesn’t have vent disease, so maybe I was wrong. I was just so worried that I asked for help. I do my research and understand what I’m doing.

I suppose I should have reworded my question and made it more clear. I want to know if it sounds like it could be vent disease, but now I’m sure it isn’t. Thank you for the help anyway. Thank you for the cost approximate as well, have a good day.
