I was petting my rabbit when i realized on his underneath (by his tail area) was some fur stuck together by maybe poop? It is hard and about the size of a quarter. I had never realized it there before, but my mom said she saw it a while ago! I am so worried  I guess i didnt look there but im almost positive that I had! My mom said she would be happy to call the vet and get him to cut it off or do whatever to get it off. But she said it wasn’t a big deal. My mom once had a rabbit live for 17 years and she thinks she is a rabbit whisperer So when i start to worry she always acts like its not a big deal… but im worried. Do you think i could cut it off? Is it hurting him? Or just probably annoying? What if it has been there awhile?!! Please help im worried and i sometimes get flies in the house and most definatly dont want him to get fly eggs laid there, is that a possibility ???! Thanks for any answers!!!!!!

It’s most likely cecals that’s got stuck to the fur. You can cut it off yourselves with nail-scissors. Sometimes rabbits produce excess cecals and they get stuck to the fur near the anus. It’s not dangerous and not uncommon. here’s some info on cecals: http://www.sandiegorabbits.org/health/scoop-poop

It’s good if your mother can hold your bunny in her lap so you can get a good look so you don’t accidentaly cut his skin. That can be very bad. But by cutting the poopy clump off, you’re just doing him a favor =)

Then just check him now and then by feeling his butt area, so this is not an issue that comes back again and again – if it is, you may have to adjust his diet some. Hay and more hay is the best remedy for this type of bunny problem.

Thank you SOOOO much bam! I will do that! Im so busy this month and feel like im neglecting my bun by the 3 daily “observations” of my bun( I skipped a few this week), basically i just feel over him and check his ears and nose and mouth which btw he hates lol!!So one more thing, , the poop or tuft of fur is really hard… and the only place i can cut it is really close to the skin, which i will be very careful cutting, but any tips for this??

My Bindi gets poo and cecals stuck to his bum fur. You can very carefully cut it off with some blunt scissors or a pair or battery powered dog clippers. If it’s stuck right against the skin, don’t risk cutting the skin. Cut off a chunk of the mat and you can sometimes work out the rest near the skin with a small comb. I use a baby comb for that job.

My Blossom has to have the occasional bottom bath to loosen the muck up when she sits in it… Generally not as bad or often now….. I put a couple of centimetres of warm water in the kitchen sink and she sits up and leans on my forearm whilst I soften up the cecals and work them out of the fur… Then we have cuddles in a big fluffy towel whilst I dry off her bottom and snip away any knots.
