        Hello,

I need some suggestions for keeping my senior foster bunnies comfortable in their pen. They have a fairly large x-pen, but right now it seems really bare  The flooring is some vinyl planks (I make sure they don’t chew them) two leather cook’s mats and concrete, so that is fine, ( I can’t have a rug, because one of them is a little incontinent, and he would make it nasty, they have a towel to sit on, and the mats are soft underneath) but I want to give them a few things to hide in and play with other than a cardboard box. Also, how would you go about putting up a sort of shelf? One of them likes to climb. Thank you! I will try to post a pic later.

Adding a small table (similar to the ikea Lack tables) would provide a shelf and a little hiding nook underneath. You could attach fabric to the edges that enclose the part underneath more so.

Or a willow tent would make a good hidey spot.

I’ve done shelves in pens before by resting a rod or broomstick on the horizontal slats halfway up pen side. Then attaching NIC grids to the pen and resting on the rod. Then cover the NIC shelf in solid surface.

Doing this, you may need a roof over that portion of the pen.

You could provide a cardboard moulding tube for them to run through. I agree that a small tabs would make a good shelf.

Table, not tabs. Can’t edit on my kindle.

Amanda, I think your lions ate my 2nd post. :p

                Nevermind, I’ll redo.

MK, if you have some carpentry skillz you could do a shelf like Beka has.

Also check out mocha200’s YouTube channel 101 Rabbits. I think she’s given a good demo of a pen with shelving.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have some siblings and my Dad who could easily help me with a shelf like that…is pine safe? I assume so, as pine litter is, right?
I can get a cardboard molding tunnel pretty easy..I had one before, but it pretty much got eaten I have to tie tunnels to the side of the x-pen, because Muffin sometimes gets stuck in them if they roll and his arthritis doesn’t let him get out, poor sweetie. But these are amazing ideas! Thanks

Yes, solid pine (untreated, unvarnished) is perfectly safe.
Pine litters however, are less safe unless kiln dried or in pelleted form.

Depending on their size, I got my bunny (only had Asia at the time) one of those hay hidey holes- Asia ate the bottom out of it in less than a month! Haha

Mine loved the willow tent – it is nice because you can just place it anywhere in the pen and it just lays on the floor where it is stable. My seniors spent all their time in their tents – now that they are gone, my rabbit Bobby loves to hide in them as well.
