My rabbit has been in labor for around 5 hours now as far as I know. She seems like she is trying to push or is having contractions.. I’m not sure. I’ve seen blood and she has made a nest. I’m not sure if this is normal and she seems really tired.
Hi NBAP, How is she doing….
Have the bubs arrived yet, delivery is usually quick and they will rest in between… 5 hrs is a long time and I would urge you to get her to a vet……
Let me know what is happening and I will give you all the advice I can….
How old is she, what kind of bun is she, do you know what the father is?
Also how long ago did you notice the blood and where is the nest ?
Hi so I checked on her this morning and still nothing!! she still seems like she is pushing though poor thing
She is about 2 years old, mini rex, and mated with a lion head.
I noticed the blood at about 4 pm yesterday afternoon and it is now 12 in the afternoon.
thank you so much!
We really are not qualified to answer your question – you need to contact your vet concerning this…it sounds like you are concerned and that would be the smartest thing to do rather than seeking advice on an internet site concerning this.
I hope that you will and all is okay with her.
Yes I know that but there’s no harm in asking.
Maybe not, but in the meantime you should be able to get ahold of your vet who can truly help you in this situation just in case there is truly a problem.
In the meantime you should try Rabbitsonline.net as they may be a better resource to answer your question.
I would get to your vet as soon as possible if it has been that long…
It sounds like she needs a vet. The babies could be stuck and if you don’t get care for her then she could die.
Keep us updated. Hoping those babies are out and ok. Usually labor only takes like 30 minutes to an hour. If there is still no babies id consider this an emergency as momma can be in great danger. Is this the first time she has bred? If so she’s quite old for her first litter. I’ve read their pelvis can be sealed if not bred by the first year in age so maybe that has something to do with this.
Also, this is a house rabbit community. We aren’t experienced in this department. Most bunnies here are actually spayed and neutered. So there won’t be much advice offered here unfortunately. But we do care a great deal which was why it was stressed she go seek a vet immediately.
Come back and let us know how everything goes. Healing vibes for your bunny. What’s her name?
All my buns are done now but I have experienced oops litters… The labour has been going on way to long…. You need to get to a vet urgently..
went to the vet and they said experiencing contractions are normal and can continue for 24-48 hours so she’s okay and should be having her babies soon!
Glad to hear… The seeing blood part worried me, that did’t happen with my oops babies till just before they started to arrive….
Keep us updated… It shouldn’t be long now…
As your bun is already two I would suggest that as soon as the babies are weaned you get her in for spay as she will be at high risk of cancer… It will also prevent any future accidents… If daddy Bunny is still about now is a good time to get him in to be neutered as they can fall pregnant again immediately which is really bad for them and the babies (as you’ll have another batch before the first ones wean and it’s a huge stress on your bunny) Bear in mind boys will have sperm for a month or more after neuter and he will still need to be separated for 4-5 weeks.
yeah my pregnant bun is alma and she’s my boyfriends bunny so I have only been around her for 5 months and my other buns have just about reached sexual maturity so it definitely will happen soon! thanks!
Have you gotten to the vet?
the only think I am really concerned about at this point is I haven’t seen her eat a lot besides a few veggies.
Yes! I got her in the vet today and all is well.
That’s not unusual, she probably isn’t feeling like a lot… Make sure she has everything available and try to keep her room quiet and darkish so she feels she has some privacy… They are very funny about that.
Are you sure that’s normal? And are you sure they specialized in bunnies? Because that can be normal in dogs and cats but I don’t think that’s normal for bunnies especially seeing the blood. Thesemaremprey animals and can’t just hang out in labor for two days. They have to have babies quick and hidden to avoid predation.

I agree with NBO. This is not normal for rabbits and if your vet said it is, then they aren’t very rabbit savvy. Please find a vet that specializes in rabbits and take her there now! She’s in distress and needs your help!
You said she’s two years old. Rabbit’s pelvic bones fuse together if they don’t have their first litter by a certain age which often makes giving birth impossible. If it’s her first litter, this might be what the problem is. If that’s the case, she has to have an emergency c-section or she will die.
Please get her to a rabbit savvy vet!
Any update?
The vet bread and raised rabbits when he was younger so I’m pretty sure he knows what he’s talking about.
Still no babies she might have just thought she was about to have them I don’t know. But at the vet he said he could feel a sac for sure.
I’m really confused at this point.
Please keep your vet up to date on her status. Find out if you can arrange last minute visit after hours if need. If the kits don’t survive in the womb, it risks her going into septic shock. As far as I can tell, it’s been over 48hrs since you first posted about this. Time is critical.
I think I may call tomorrow if I don’t find any babies in the morning.
I honestly don’t know if you can wait that long.
Call someone knowledgeable to find out. Vets…Local breeders…
You’re the one who is physically there with your rabbit. We can’t help her, we can only urge you into action.
I truly hope she’ll be ok.
{{{Alma}}}
Breed and raising rabbits when you are younger does not mean he knows MEDICALLY anything about rabbits unless he actually got trained. You would be surprised how many breeders I know that are ignorant to this kind of stuff. Unintentionally. But some just don’t know. Especially when they are younger like in their teens.
I am starting to become more urgent that you get her to a vet asap. 48 hours is way too long from the site of blood and no babies showing up. It may very well be too late for them. But if they stay in there too long, momma is at great risk. ESPECIALLY if the babies are no longer living. This has become an emergency. Where do you live. General area. Like state and city. We can help you find a vet that specializes in rabbits. Not one that just has personal knowledge from once “breeding and raising” rabbits. But one that treats them everyday as their career and focal point. I really feel as though this is not normal and since she STILL has not had babies, needs to be seen as soon as possible. Is she still eating and drinking Pooping?

I’m sorry but that doesn’t mean anything. Putting two rabbits together doesn’t make anyone an expert. There are tons of people who breed rabbits and don’t have any idea what they’re doing. You yourself bred your rabbit and didn’t know if any of this is normal or not.
I’m not trying to argue, I’m just very concerned about your girl and I hope you get her to a vet before it’s too late for her.
Agree with the others and I have had litters (by accident not design) this is way too long if there has been blood… She needs the vet now or it will be too late.
Any update?
Still No babies!! I’m starting to think she was never pregnant.. but why would she bleed
Could be reproductive cancer. She’s already two, after all. The chance of cancer in unspayed females reaches 85% by 3-4 years of age. It’s impossible to say what caused it without a vet visit.
I thought the vet confirmed the pregnancy when you took her in?
Hazel could be right. How is she now?
Yep that too but I thought you said the vet was for sure he felt a sac? I think you need to get a different vet asap. Whats your general area and we can help you find a reliable vet
It’s not uncommon for a first litter to be still born or deformed so it is quite possible that she has not delivered the unviable or deceased babies which is another good reason to get her to a rabbit savvy vet… Cancer is definitely a concern at that age as well… If there are no babies now I would not wait a moment longer to get her treatment…
Yes the vet is going to be switched but I live in Grand Haven, Michigan and I would be going to Grand rapids for a vet most likely but I had researched and thats the best I’ve gotten but I did not like him that much. Alma is back to normal besides having really small poops and not using her litter box. Should I be concerned about her poop being small? and sometimes really smoochy not the type that she would eat though.

Thank You!!!
I’m just seeing this now. Very strange situation!
Do you know what date she was with the male?
You say she’s better now, is she no longer “laboring”? Is she moving about, behaving and eating normally?
Just wondering, when you said there was blood, was it actually smeared on her rear end or was it reddish puddles about that looked a bit like red pee ?
I’m concerned of the oregnancy because she said she built a nest and everything :/
Unless it was in fact a false pregnancy… Those can get pretty hairy too and go on for 3-4 days with lots of collapsing and panting in between… That’s why I asked if the blood was present on her fur or in a puddle like pee.
I’m thinking false pregnancy too, but you still need yo get her to the vet for the bleeding.
