We just brought our buns home yesterday. I put them in their condo after two hours of playtime this morning to go to class. When I got home they had escaped!! Little Bundinis….thats ok though because the room they’re in is bunny proofed. My concern is there is poo everywhere! Well when I got them put away for a bit (they had mostly peed in their litterbox yay with only a few piddles on my bed (of course) to clean up there are about 6-8 piles of cecal pellets! That’s alot? Or normal? I know this they’re horrible to step on bc they squish like grapes and stick like nobodys business. I know they are supposed to eat these. And I know they can over produce them if given a rich diet which they don’t have. They eat Kaytee forti-diet pellets and katee timothy hay. We haven’t introduced greens or treats yet so are they just not eating them? Or should I change their diet somehow such as limiting their pellets and pushing hay?

How old are they? I think they are fairly young aren’t they?

Most young rabbits do produce more cecals normally because they are given too much pellets which is probably the case anyway for rabbits from a shelter.

Yeah they are 8 weeks on Wednesday. So how much should I give them in pellets each? I had read until three months to give them unlimited hay and pellets.

Well, it should be unlimited but I think it’s a good idea to measure them out and see how much they actually do eat daily. Start with a cup? Are they actually going to eat it all in one day.

Also would be good to know if they are good hay eaters – you’ve only had them a few days so I know you are just learning what they are like :~)

But that amount of cecals, it’s not unusual and it’s not a sign of illness as long as they are perfectly formed – it’s a problem for us owners though because we have to clean them up – don’t clean them though before they dry if they are on your rug – that will be much more difficult to clean – let them dry and you can usually pick them off the carpet.

                Good advice thank you!
I think I may have found the problem. My boyfriend left half of a banana out on our bedside table and the buns ate all but a tiny piece. I think maybe the extra sugar might have helped. But im going to start measuring their pellets anyway as I really like that idea to help me keep an eye on their diet

From experience with Oops and rescue litters I have noticed that baby bunnies when excited or disrupted will produce a lot of extra cecals as well as the natural excess from the required richer diet…. Give it a week and I think the problem will resolve itself without reducing their food… They would only just be weaned so they are still getting the hang of it.

and yes… That banana certainly would have aided cecal production to the point where they could leave you lots of nasty little surprises underfoot.

Lol yeah I figured as much but I bet they were happy when they got into it lol. They sure were cuddly after like they knew they did something they weren’t supposed to and were apologetic lol.
