Max is a year old and I adopted him from a shelter 7 months ago. Dora is 2 and I adopted her 2 weeks ago. When I first brought Dora home I would let each one out of their cages separately. Max would lunge at Dora through his cage but she didn’t care when he was around hers. Now I let them out together and Max will sometimes chase Dora. They go into each others cage. They were good so when they both went in Max’s cage I left them in there together for a few hours while I was home. Max chases Dora sometimes and even tries to hump her. They are both fixed. But I take Dora out at night to be in her own cage.

So question is how will I know when I can keep them in the same cage together? They seem to be ok with each other.

          They’re fixed right?

If they don’t fight then I think you can consider them bonded.

            Tessie,
Yes they are fixed. So they can stay in one cage from now on? And stupid question will Max stop humping Dora? I didn’t think they did that if they were fixed. Sorry these are my first and only animals

No need to be sorry at all!

I’m not an expert, but I think they hump sometimes, just to show dominance. Maybe someone else will know more.

And yeah, if they’ve been happy together and not fighting for 24 hours or so then you’re good.

Tessie is right about humping being dominance related.

What have you done to bond them? I don’t suggest putting them together in territorial areas like one or the others cage. It’s really easy for situations to escalate in those spaces and become dangerous. If you haven’t checked out the bonding article on BB it’s a really good place to start:

Update on Max and Dora. After letting them out in living room to play at the same time for a week I put them in Max’s cage for the next week during the day when I was home and putting Dora back in her own cage at night. They got along after Max’s first few times of trying to mount her now they are in the cage together all the time. I even catch them laying nose to nose once and awhile. Now I wish they wouldn’t poop all over in their cage they both used a litter box before. But I’m thinking its to mark territory and hopefully they will stop doing it. Thanks to those to responded to my post.

Glad to hear they are making out so well. The territorial poos usually subside after some time.
