I adopted an 8 week old baby lionhead rabbit from a woman who does rabbit rescue in my area.  I set up the little guy like a king in my  office where I spend most of my time when home. For his age he is AMAZING with the litter box.  I ve been using dandelion leaves as positive reinforcement whenever I interact with him. Ill call for him and then give him a dandelion leaf and now after 3 weeks he comes running as soon as he hears me calling lol. However he is still aloof when it comes to physical affection and alot of times still shies away from me or my hands although he comes running to get the food lol . Ive read dozens of articles about how not to approach a rabbit and where the good spots are to touch etc. and I utilize all those methods with him.   In addition, 80% of the time he absolutely detests being picked up even though I dont even lift him and carry him I only set him in my lap when sitting on the floor. The other 20% of the time he just lets me pick him up without a problem. I would like some advice on how I can improve the bonding process and make it more productive while being stress free for the bunny . I am so scared of giving him an irreparably bad experience ! At the same time i kind of feel like he is creating his own little life in my house that does NOT include me in it … any tips and advice is greatly appreciated

All bunnies are so different… Every one I know says their buns hate having their bottom touched yet my Starsky goes into bulging eyed fits of ecstacy when you scratch his bottom and wants to lick you to death… If you try to stop he keeps pressing his bottom against your hand and nudging your hand with his chin till you scratch his bottom again. Most of my girls love Craisins and will do anything for those where as Piglet disdains treats and insists on being sung to “The Handsome Piglet Song” to the tune of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song “Truly Scrumptious”

I second the craisins. We have a bunny that likes to put her head between headphones to listen to the music.

Anyway, I agree that all bunnies are so different from one another. Neither of my buns like being lifted, however, Moogle LOVES to cuddle and chases us around the house frequently tugging on our pants until we come down and give him some love. He also gives kisses on our faces, with the understanding that he will get the same (he licks us, we pet/rub his head). Ashe is the complete opposite! She prefers that we mind our own business unless she wants pets (rarely). She boxes and lunges frequently. Usually she goes through phases. I’ve had two other rabbits, and none of them were alike.

My suggestion is to learn how to read your bunnies body language. The other day Moogle boxed Zach. Zach yelled at him, and he got the bunny butt. Later in the day, Moogle did the “forgiveness grooming session” and Zach did it back, and all was well. Very funny to watch a grown man pretension to lick his arm.

Most bunnies hate to be picked up. It’s a very scary thing for a prey animal and that’s perfectly normal. Some bunnies also take a while to learn to appreciate human affection, like petting and snuggling. 3 weeks is not that long for a new bunny to be in your home. Sounds like you are offering him a great home, just give him more time to get settled in.

I agree with LPT. Just give it time and continue to build trust.
