I have been trying to switch Simon from alfalfa to timothy hay as he has reached maturity. Switching his pellets from young to adult was not difficult, but he is not that interested in his timothy hay in his feeder. However he will eat the timothy in his litter box. He normally eats about half the hay in his feeder at night if its alfalfa, but if its timothy it goes untouched. Even if I mix the two types of hay he still wont eat it. As a result I have caved and just kept giving him alfalfa because I want him to eat, but I know he needs to eat Timothy. Any suggestions?

You can try different grass hays like orchard or meadow or oat – it doesn’t have to be timothy. Give those a try.

Did you introduce the timothy hay slowly? I had to do the same thing with my second rabbit. Start with just a little bit of timothy hay in his alfalfa hay. As he gets better about eating it, slowly add in more timothy hay and use less alfalfa hay.
