I have a 9 week old bunny that when they’re in their cage they always put their paws in the water bowl when they drink or when they go to lean up on the side of the cage. So their water bottle gets so dirty so easily. I keep them caged when I’m a work so I just want switch to a water bottle bc I want to make sure they’re getting clean water when I’m not home. Or should I maybe move the food and water bowl to the back of the cage? I don’t know if that would really solve the issue of it putting it’s paw in the bowl when eating or drinking.

I kind of strayed off topic of why I created this forum, will the bunny have a hard time switching from a bowl to a bottle? Like will they know how to use it?

You can offer both and see what they take to, but bowls are a more natural way for them to drink and are usually preferred by rabbits.

I wouldn’t worry about them having the cleanest possible water in the few hours you are at work. At long as the bowl is changed every day, it is definitely clean enough, and will likely be cleaner than anything out of a bottle. The “straw” is hard to clean, as is the bottle itself. On top of that, it is less likely to be changed every day, leaving more time for bacteria to build up. With plastic bottles there is also a concern with things leeching into the water from the plastic. I personally find the noise caused by a bottle very annoying as well, but that is just me.

I’m not sure how big your cage is, but you might definitely be able to solve your problem by simply moving it to a different part of the cage.

I agree w/Beka and Kyt-How clean is it when you return? Maybe it’s not much of a concern if it’s a bit dirty.

I agree that if it gets a bit dirty it won’t hurt. You could put the bowl on a platform it may help.

Um… I use a bottle for Henry – he used it from day one as a nine week old and had no probs. But my bottle sounds very different? It’s a large glass bottle with NO straw, and I use a baby bottle brush with a drop or two of detergent and a few rinses to clean it weekly – sparkling clean! When I found out from BB that bun’s like to drink from a bowl I thought I’d offer both, but with Henry being a ‘constant’ moulter (loosing fur) it was coated with floating fluff in the hour, so am back to ‘just’ the bottle. If you can get a bottle like mine as I described above – glass with NO straw and offer both. That’s what I’d do….. Cheers Princess_Lynda.
PS – And if your bun tips the water bowl over they have another source of water if your not home to refill it.

I think there’s a brand called Lixit or Lyxit or something that is a glass bottle. I looked into those before but my rabbit prefers the water bowl.

I just rinse and refill the bowl once or twice a day. She has stepped in it before, but no harm… She dries the paw off.

Andi-how does it work with no straw? Those sound like a good bottle for my pigs!

I’ll take a pic LEL and post it here for you (and Princess_Lynda) – just gotta wait for the hubby to get back from visiting his parents for him to upload it to the computer. Cheers.

Edit to ADD – DOH!!!! I just realised the term ‘straw’, is that the spout? If so, SORRY! Mine has a spout – but when I bought the baby brush to clean the bottle it came with a tiny brush like a mascara brush and I use that to clean the spout/straw and I’m sure mine looks perfectly clean? I’ll post the pic anyway….. (and again SORRY if I got it wrong).

I have tried to change water bowl to water bottle. My bunny need training to get used to it. By the way, I utilize a baby bottle brush set to clean the water bottle. Find out it work pretty well. The water  bottle can be easily cleansed.

When using a water bottle, rabbits have to try to get water out of the metal tube. Over time, it can damage their teeth.

Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend using a water bottle unless your really have to. For example you are gone most of the day to work, and the water bowl gets knocked over too often.

Maybe in the meantime try to move the water bowl in a different location.
