I brought Zeus to the new vet on Monday – he needed a sanitary shave, and my normal vet couldn’t fit him in anywhere.  So I tried the local vet.  They’re 5 minutes from my house, versus my old vet which was 45+ minutes from home.

The vet was very nice and just very quiet and gentle with handling Zeus.  He seemed pretty comfortable with a bunny, and even did this cool trick when he was trimming his nails.  Zeus hates to be picked up, so for his back feet, he just kind of stretched the foot out behind him (like when a bunny is stretched out in the “superman” pose).  With his foot like that, Zeus still felt like he was close to the ground and secure, and the vet had access to his nails.  Very cool.

The shave went well, and just like with the nails, he was able to kind of just manipulate Zeus’s bottom so he could so the shave with his paws still on the exam table.  In general Zeus seemed less stressed, the vet was very handy at figuring out ways to do things the way Zeus didn’t mind it.

He didn’t really seem concerned about Zeus’s dirty bottom, and just suggested trying a monthly butt bath in a dishpan with just some warm water.  He also suggested fresh pineapple juice, 2 or 3 ccs, once monthly.

All in all, it was a good visit.  His office isn’t anywhere near as fancy as my old vet’s, and he doesn’t have any vet techs on staff who can do exotics, so it was me and my boyfriend doing all the holding.  But it was admittedly nice working with the vet one on one versus the vet tech.  He’s definitely very “old school”, he’s been practicing over 20 years.  He was very impressed I found a vet to do both of my bunnies’ de-sexing surgeries, LOL.  So I guess he doesn’t do operative work on bunnies, so if that need were ever to arise (not to jinx myself!), I’d probably have to go back to the old vet.

Bonus points, it was a few dollars cheaper than my old vet.

It’s always good when you find a cheaper and easier alternative. Glad it was a successful visit!

I’m glad, too.    Zeus went right on back to his normal self about 5 mins after we got home.  It usually took a little longer after the long drive home from the other vet.

Glad you found someone you like.

The pineapple juice though – that is very old school and I’m not entirely sure what that would have to do with his problem…

He mentioned something about the enzymes in pineapple juice helping his digestive tract, so less overly-soft poops.  At least that’s the way I understood it.

Pineapple is high in sugar so that won’t help in soft poop, but contribute to it.

I think more likely at his age and his size he is having mobility problems and is unable to reach his cecals – could be the onset of arthritis…very common in rabbits. Rabbits with arthritis also have problems posturing properly when urinating which can cause them also have some urine scald.

Here is a good article – read particularly the info on spondylosis – I’ve had quite a few rabbits with this problem and it sounds alot like what you are experiencing with Zeus:

Thanks for the articles Sarita, they’re much appreciated. I may try those glucosamine treats by Oxbow – in the past he’s never been a fan of Oxbow pellets or treats though, picky little man.

I think it’s worth trying those – I’ve given a few of those supplements as treats – they aren’t what you would expect them to look like either – they kind of look like small cookies almost – more like their barley and veggie treats than pellets. I see that Oxbow has come out with an increased line of supplements – I know they make good treats if nothing else :~)

Yeah I tried their “Digestion Support” treats awhile back… sometimes he grudgingly will eat one, if I withold tastier things. .

They make like juice for people with glucosamine in it… I wonder if he’d like that.  But then I’d have to be careful of sugar content I guess.
